## Geographic presence

ANZ’s principal domestic markets are Australia and New Zealand, alongside Pacific operations and an international Institutional network covering close to 30 markets. ANZ reports an on-the-ground presence in more than 10 Asian markets, with Institutional activity spanning Australia, New Zealand, Asia, the Pacific, Europe, North America and the Middle East. Financial-markets locations include Sydney, Melbourne, Auckland, Wellington, Singapore, Hong Kong, Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul, London and New York. The network figures describe Institutional coverage, not necessarily the retail branch footprint. [24](https://www.anz.com/institutional/global/)[20](https://www.anz.com/institutional/solutions/financial-markets/)

In FY2025, year-end employee FTE was 20,899 in Australia, 6,758 in New Zealand and 15,041 in the Rest of World—approximately 49%, 16% and 35% of the 42,698 total, respectively. [25](https://app.finbar.com/go?id=T8410759) ANZ’s geographic interest-income disclosure for the year was A$43,903 million from Australia, A$9,595 million from New Zealand and A$10,425 million from the Rest of World. These figures relate to interest-earning assets, rather than total operating revenue; the available revenue breakdown is by business division, and does not provide a directly comparable country-level revenue allocation. ## Company history

ANZ traces its origins to the Bank of Australasia, established in 1835. In 1951, the Bank of Australasia merged with the Union Bank of Australia to form ANZ Bank; a further merger on 1 October 1970, between ANZ Ltd and the English, Scottish and Australian Bank, formed Australia and New Zealand Banking Group Limited. [29](https://www.anz.com.au/newsroom/news/2021/10/anz-70-year-anniversary-bank-australasia-union-history/)[30](https://www.anz.com.au/bluenotes/2020/10/anz-history-english-scottish-australian-bank-merger-1970/)

From the 1980s into the 2000s, ANZ expanded its regional presence, acquiring Grindlays in 1984, PostBank in New Zealand in 1989 and the National Bank of New Zealand in 2003. It broadened its wealth-management business through the 2009 acquisition of ING Group’s stakes in Australian and New Zealand joint ventures, and expanded in Asia in 2010 by acquiring six RBS businesses. In 2016, ANZ announced it would sell retail and wealth businesses in several Asian markets, with sales completed by 2018 as it refocused its regional presence on institutional banking. In Australia, ANZ completed its acquisition of Suncorp Bank on 31 July 2024.
