## Company history

CCL’s operations began in Toronto in 1951 as Connecticut Chemicals (Canada) Limited; Gordon S. Lang is identified as its founder. Conn Chem Limited acquired the business in 1972, and CCL’s 2013 annual report records that it had been publicly listed under the CCL Industries name since 1980. The company expanded substantially through acquisitions. In 2013 it completed the purchase of Avery Dennison’s Office & Consumer Products and Designed & Engineered Solutions businesses, a transaction CCL described at the time as the largest in its history. In 2016 it completed its acquisition of Checkpoint Systems, extending its operations into retail inventory management and loss prevention. In 2017 CCL completed its acquisition of Innovia, adding specialty films and polymer banknote substrate capabilities. In 2023 it acquired Creaprint, an in-mould-label producer, and Pouch Partners, a flexible-pouch specialist; in June 2024 it acquired the remaining 50% of its Pacman-CCL Middle East label joint venture.
