## Company history

Established under the Commonwealth Bank Act 1911, the Commonwealth Bank began operations in 1912, with its first branch opening in Melbourne on 15 July. In 1931 it merged with the government-owned Savings Bank of New South Wales and acquired Western Australia’s State Savings Bank. The separation of central banking functions in 1960 led to the creation of the Reserve Bank of Australia, while the Commonwealth Banking Corporation continued as a commercial bank. The bank introduced Bankcard in 1974, Keycard in 1981 and EFTPOS in 1984. It expanded into New Zealand through its 1989 acquisition of a majority stake in ASB Bank, later taking full ownership in 2000. Privatisation began in 1991 and was completed in 1996; meanwhile, NetBank launched in 1997. The 2000 acquisition of Colonial Limited broadened its financial-services businesses, followed by the 2008 acquisition of Bankwest.
