## Company history

Commonwealth Serum Laboratories (CSL) was established by the Australian Government in Melbourne in 1916 to produce medicines and vaccines; during the 1919 influenza pandemic, it manufactured vaccine for use in Australia. CSL expanded into plasma fractionation in the 1950s. It became a statutory commission in 1961, was converted into a public company in 1991, and was fully privatised through a public share float in 1994.
