## Company history

GE HealthCare’s history grew out of General Electric’s medical-technology work. GE’s corporate roots date to 1892; in 1896, Elihu Thomson built X-ray equipment and demonstrated stereoscopic images, and in 1913 William Coolidge developed the hot-cathode, high-vacuum X-ray tube. Later imaging milestones included GE’s 7800 CT system in 1978 and its 1.5T MRI scanner in 1983. [44](https://www.ge.com/history-ge-healthcare) [45](https://signapulse.gehealthcare.com/autumn-2024/signa-mr-see-the-future-change-the-outcome)

GE expanded its ultrasound business through the acquisitions of Diasonics Vingmed in 1998 and Kretztechnik in 2001. Its 2004 acquisition of Amersham brought diagnostic-imaging agents and life-sciences businesses into GE Medical Systems under the GE Healthcare name. After GE announced plans to separate its healthcare business in 2021, GE HealthCare became an independent public company on January 3, 2023, when GE distributed approximately 80.1% of its shares to GE stockholders; its shares began trading on Nasdaq as GEHC.
