## Company history

Mid America Apartment Communities traces its public-company origins to 1994, when it completed its IPO on January 28. In February of that year, founder George E. Cates’s The Cates Company merged with Mid-America. Cates served as President and CEO until his planned retirement in October 2001, when H. Eric Bolton Jr. succeeded him as CEO. The company expanded through two major combinations: it completed an $8.3 billion merger with Colonial Properties Trust on October 1, 2013, and a merger with Post Properties on December 1, 2016, following the announcement of a $17 billion combination. In January 2024, MAA marked 30 years as a publicly traded company. On April 1, 2025, A. Bradley Hill became President and CEO, succeeding Bolton, who became Executive Chairman.
