Business segments
Acuity reports two business segments: Acuity Brands Lighting (ABL) and Acuity Intelligent Spaces (AIS). ABL focuses on lighting solutions, including luminaires, drivers, and lighting-control products. AIS includes connected-space technologies such as Atrius data and cloud applications, Distech Controls building-management systems, and QSC audio, video, and control platforms.[26]
In fiscal 2026, ABL reported sales of approximately $3,576.0 million and AIS approximately $1,106.6 million, against consolidated sales of $4,641.8 million. These represent approximately 77.0% and 23.8% of consolidated sales, respectively; the combined segment amounts exceed consolidated sales because of eliminations.[27]
For comparison, the audited FY2025 Form 10-K reported ABL sales of $3,612.2 million and AIS sales of $764.3 million, with consolidated sales of $4,345.6 million. Their approximate contributions were 83.1% and 17.6%, respectively; the report notes $30.9 million of eliminations.[26] [26][27][27]
Company history
Lithonia Lighting, founded by Sam Freeman in Georgia in 1946, is an early predecessor in Acuity Brands’ history. Acuity Brands was incorporated in Delaware in 2001 and emerged from National Service Industries’ spin-off that November; its shares began regular-way trading on the NYSE in December.[28][29][30] In 2004, Vernon J. Nagel became chairman and CEO.[31]
In 2007, Acuity spun off its specialty-products business, Zep, while acquiring the architectural-lighting assets of Mark Architectural Lighting.[32][33] It expanded its lighting-controls and LED capabilities with the 2009 acquisition of Sensor Switch and the 2013 acquisition of LED-driver designer eldoLED.[34][35]
Acuity broadened beyond lighting hardware into software and building automation in the 2010s: it acquired ByteLight’s indoor-location software assets and Distech Controls in 2015, then introduced Atrius for its IoT business solutions in 2017.[36][37][38] It added indoor mapping capabilities through its 2019 acquisition of LocusLabs. In 2020, Neil M. Ashe succeeded Nagel as president and CEO, and in 2021 Acuity acquired ams OSRAM’s North American Digital Systems business, adding LED drivers and light engines.[39][40][41] [29][32][35][36][37][28][30][31][33][34][38][39][40][41]
