Business segments
Advance Auto Parts reports one operating segment and one reportable segment, Advance Auto Parts/Carquest. It accounts for 100% of reported consolidated net sales as a reporting segment; this does not indicate that the company separately reports revenue shares for the two trade brands or its customer channels. The company states that its chief operating decision maker reviews financial information on a consolidated basis.[2][24][25]
The Advance Auto Parts brand serves professional and do-it-yourself (DIY) customers with aftermarket parts for domestic and import vehicles. Carquest primarily focuses on professional customers while also serving DIY customers. These are brand and customer-focus descriptions, not separately reported business segments, and the cited filings do not disclose their individual revenue contributions.[3][4] [2][24][25][3][4]
Company history
Advance Auto Parts traces its origins to 1929, when Advance Stores Company was founded as a general-merchandise retailer. In 1932, Arthur Taubman took ownership of the company and acquired stores in Roanoke and Lynchburg, Virginia. The business shifted its focus to automotive parts and accessories in the 1980s, began professional delivery in 1996, and expanded service to professional customers in 2000.[7][26]
The company expanded through major acquisitions and combinations: in 1998 it agreed to combine with Sears’ Western Auto retail and wholesale operations; in 2001, Advance Auto Parts was incorporated in connection with its acquisition of Discount Auto Parts; and in 2014 it acquired General Parts International, bringing the Carquest and Worldpac businesses into its portfolio.[27][28][29]
In 2023, Shane O’Kelly became president and CEO, succeeding Tom Greco. In 2024, Advance agreed to sell Worldpac and completed the sale that November, describing the divestiture as part of a greater focus on its Advance blended-box model. A restructuring plan announced in November 2024 led to substantial store closures during 2025.[30][31][32][33] [7][26][27][28][29][30][31][32][33][26][27][28][29][30]
