Its core business is producing and marketing thermal and metallurgical coal, alongside earning royalties from oil-and-gas and coal mineral interests. Its coal operations include seven mining complexes across Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia; its oil-and-gas interests are concentrated in the Permian, Anadarko, and Williston basins. Coal is sold to domestic utility and industrial customers as well as international markets.[1][2]

Products & services

Alliance Resource Partners produces and sells thermal and metallurgical coal with a range of sulfur and heat characteristics to meet customer specifications. Its coal’s reported heat content ranges from 11,400 to 13,200 Btu; in 2025, tons sold comprised 18.7% low-sulfur, 51.8% medium-sulfur, and 29.5% high-sulfur coal. Customers include electric utilities, industrial users, and international markets.[2]

The company also receives royalties and lease bonuses from oil and gas mineral interests, primarily in the Permian, Anadarko, and Williston basins. For the six months ended June 30, 2026, coal sales represented approximately 85.5% of consolidated revenue and oil-and-gas royalties approximately 8.2%; transportation revenue associated with coal operations represented approximately 1.5%. These percentages are calculated from reported revenue figures.[1][5] [2]

Alliance Resource Partners LP’s coal operations are concentrated in the United States, across the Illinois Basin and Appalachia. Its 2025 reporting identifies mining complexes in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Pennsylvania and West Virginia, and an Ohio River coal-loading terminal in Indiana. The Illinois Basin complexes are Gibson, Warrior, River View (including the Henderson County mine) and Hamilton; Appalachia includes Mettiki, Tunnel Ridge and MC Mining. Specific locations include Gibson South near Princeton, Indiana; River View near Uniontown and Henderson County near Corydon, Kentucky; Hamilton near McLeansboro, Illinois; Mountain View in Tucker County, West Virginia, with Mettiki’s preparation plant near Oakland, Maryland; and Tunnel Ridge on the West Virginia–Pennsylvania border.[6]

The company markets coal to domestic utilities and industrial users as well as international customers, shipping by barge, rail and truck; the reviewed reporting does not specify sales destinations by country or customer-region revenue percentages. For 2025, coal-sales revenue by operating segment was $1,342.334 million in the Illinois Basin and $590.181 million in Appalachia, approximately 69.5% and 30.5%, respectively, of consolidated coal-sales revenue of $1,932.515 million. These are operating-segment shares, not destination-market shares.[1]

The partnership additionally has oil-and-gas royalty interests in producing regions across the United States, including Marcellus and Utica interests in the Appalachian Basin and mineral interests in Mississippi’s Tuscaloosa Marine Shale.[14] [6]

Appalachia Coal Operations produces and markets coal in the Appalachia region; it contributed about 28.5%. Company history

Alliance Resource Partners’ business roots date to 1971, when MAPCO acquired the Dotiki mine. In 1996, management formed Alliance Coal Corporation and acquired MAPCO’s coal operations. Alliance Resource Partners was formed in May 1999, completed its initial public offering on August 19, and acquired substantially all of Alliance Resource Holdings’ coal-production and marketing assets. Joseph W. Craft III became president and chief executive officer that August.[19]

The partnership expanded through acquisitions and mine development: it acquired the Warrior mining complex in 2003, began production at the River View mine in 2009, and acquired White Oak’s remaining equity in the Hamilton mine in 2015 after supporting its development through earlier transactions. In 2017–2018, it completed transactions that changed its partnership structure and eliminated general-partner net-income allocations. Craft, CEO since 1999, became chairman on January 1, 2019.[22] [20]
