Overview

Asahi Group Holdings Ltd. is a Japan-based global beverage and food group whose businesses span alcoholic beverages—including beer and other beer-type products—non-alcoholic beverages, and food products. Its major geographic regions are Japan & East Asia, Europe, and Asia Pacific, with production sites across Japan, Europe, and Asia Pacific. The group traces its origins to Osaka Brewery, founded in 1889.[1]

Asahi Group’s purpose is “Make the world shine through genuine connections.” In FY2025, it reported consolidated net sales of ¥2,894.7 billion and had 28,560 employees as of December 31, 2025.[4] [1]

Products & services

Asahi Group Holdings’ beverage portfolio includes beer and beer-like products, whisky and other spirits, ready-to-drink beverages, wine, shochu, non-alcoholic beverages and soft drinks. Named brands include Asahi Super Dry, Peroni Nastro Azzurro, Kozel and Nikka. Asahi describes Super Dry as smooth, crisp and dry, and attributes its characteristic profile to proprietary yeast No. 318 and its fermentation conditions.[7][8]

Non-alcoholic and soft-drink products include Asahi Super Dry 0.0%, Peroni Nastro Azzurro 0.0%, Mitsuya, CALPIS and WONDA. Asahi says its Dry Zero is made without wort and uses a small amount of MBT to reproduce a characteristic fermented aroma; the company describes this method as patented. CALPIS product development includes stabilizing milk proteins for a smooth mouthfeel and using multilayer bottles designed to protect flavor from light and oxygen.[7]

Its food and healthcare-related offerings include Mintia and Amano Foods brands, freeze-dried miso soup and meals, infant and senior foods, dietary supplements, seasonings and skincare. Asahi’s freeze-dried-food development focuses on selecting ingredients and adjusting drying conditions to preserve flavor and texture.[7]

For FY2025, alcohol beverages generated about 72.6% of consolidated revenue, soft drinks 21.5%, food and pharmaceuticals 4.3%, and other activities 2.0%, calculated from the reported category revenues and total.[13] [13]

Company history

Asahi’s predecessor, Osaka Brewery, was founded in November 1889, and launched Asahi Beer in 1892. It introduced Asahi Nama Beer in 1900, described in the company timeline as Japan’s first bottled unpasteurized beer. Osaka Brewery joined two other brewers to form Dai Nippon Brewery in 1906; after that company was split in 1949, Asahi Breweries was established.[27]

Asahi introduced Asahi Gold, identified in its timeline as Japan’s first canned beer, in 1958, and launched Asahi Super Dry in 1987. It expanded internationally from the 1990s, including entering China in 1994, and made Nikka Whisky Distilling a wholly owned subsidiary in 2001. Acquisitions and restructuring followed: it acquired Schweppes Australia and a stake in Tsingtao Brewery in 2009, became a holding company under the Asahi Group Holdings name in 2011, and acquired Calpis in 2012. In 2016 it entered Europe through the acquisition of beer businesses in Italy, the Netherlands and the UK; in 2020 it completed its acquisition of Carlton & United Breweries in Australia.[27] [27]
