Business segments

Associated Banc-Corp reports three operating segments. Corporate and Commercial Specialty serves larger businesses, developers, nonprofits, municipalities, and financial institutions, providing commercial lending, deposits and cash-management services, and specialty financial services [22]. Community, Consumer and Business serves individuals and businesses through consumer and business lending and deposit products, as well as investment, fiduciary, and retirement-planning services [23][8]. Risk Management and Shared Services includes shared operational functions and residual revenue and expenses, including interest-rate-risk and credit-risk/provision items [24]. The company moved private wealth from Corporate and Commercial Specialty to Community, Consumer and Business effective in the fourth quarter of 2024, and recast prior segment data [25].

By the company’s reported total income before provision, Corporate and Commercial Specialty contributed approximately 42% and Community, Consumer and Business 68% in FY2025; Risk Management and Shared Services was approximately −10%. For the first half of 2026, the respective contributions were approximately 38%, 64%, and −2%. The negative contribution reflects the shared-services and residual segment’s reported expense [26][27]. At FY2025 year-end, the segments represented approximately 42%, 30%, and 28% of consolidated assets, respectively [26]. [22]

Company history

Associated Banc-Corp traces its origins to First National Bank of Neenah, founded in 1861. In 1970, First National joined Kellogg Citizens Bank of Green Bay and Manitowoc Savings Bank in an alliance identified as the founding of Associated Bank; the three banks adopted the Associated name and tree logo in 1992. First Financial merged with Associated Bank in 1997, with the combined bank retaining the Associated name.[28]

The company expanded through acquisitions and branch purchases: it completed its acquisition of Bank Mutual Corporation in 2018, purchased Huntington National Bank’s Wisconsin branch operations in 2019, and acquired First Staunton Bancshares in 2020.[29]

Andrew J. Harmening became president and CEO on April 28, 2021, succeeding Philip B. Flynn.[32] In 2025, Associated agreed to acquire American National Corporation; the merger closed on April 1, 2026, expanding the company’s presence in Omaha and the Twin Cities.[33] [33]
