Company profile

Aurora Innovation, Inc.

Updated

Overview

Aurora Innovation, Inc. develops autonomous-driving technology, centered on the Aurora Driver—a system combining self-driving hardware, software, and data services for trucks and other vehicle types. Its core offerings include autonomous freight trucking and ride-hailing, with a planned Driver-as-a-Service model for fleet customers and partners. The company’s stated mission is “to deliver the benefits of self-driving technology safely, quickly, and broadly”; it is headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.[1]

Aurora’s commercial operations and strategic footprint are U.S.-focused, including autonomous freight routes in Texas and the Southwest; the company also lists locations in the Bay Area, Dallas, and Pittsburgh. Founded in 2017, Aurora began driverless commercial trucking operations in 2025. It reported approximately 1,900 employees at year-end 2025 and $3 million in revenue for fiscal 2025.[5] [1]

Products & services

Aurora’s core product is the Aurora Driver, an integrated self-driving platform combining hardware, software, and data services, designed for use across passenger vehicles, light commercial vehicles, and Class 8 trucks. Its commercial offering, Aurora Driver for Freight, provides driverless trucking on highway-focused freight routes. Aurora currently operates trucks itself or with operating partners and provides transportation services; its planned Driver as a Service model would let customers own and maintain fleets while subscribing to the Driver and related services, with payment per mile or through a comparable arrangement.[1]

Aurora Driver 2 combines new software with second-generation commercial hardware and is designed to operate a truck without a person behind the wheel. The International LT-based truck hardware kit is engineered for one million miles; Aurora describes an improved, more efficient computer and FirstLight FMCW lidar with a one-kilometer range, which it says provides over 34 seconds of reaction time at highway speeds. Aurora expects the new hardware to reduce Driver hardware costs by more than 50%.[11][12]

Reported capabilities include driverless highway freight and supervised testing of weigh-station navigation and on-route fueling; truck-stop pilots include navigating into and out of a fuel island while staff fuel the truck. Aurora has also reported driverless operations between a customer facility and a mining site using a frac-sand trailer. Driverless ride-hailing and local-goods delivery are described as potential future markets, rather than established current offerings.[13] The company’s reported materials do not provide revenue or performance as a percentage by individual product.[15] [1]

Geographic presence

Aurora Innovation’s geographic footprint is concentrated in the United States. Its 2025 filing says it tested self-driving vehicles in Arizona, California, New Mexico, Pennsylvania, and Texas [16]. By July 2026, the company described its driverless network as spanning 10 routes across the U.S. Sun Belt; a May 2026 announcement also identified autonomous freight operations on the Dallas–Houston route in Texas [17][18]. The filing also identifies Arizona, Florida, New Mexico, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Texas as states with a welcoming autonomous-vehicle regulatory climate [19].

Aurora is headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where its facilities support research and development and general and administrative functions. It also leases office space in Mountain View, California, and office and industrial space in other U.S. cities that are not specified in the filing [20]. As of December 31, 2025, it reported an approximately 1,900-person team, including approximately 1,600 employees focused on engineering and product, but did not provide geographic employee counts [5]. Its filings do not disclose revenue by country or region [23][24]. [16]

Business segments

Aurora Innovation reports one operating and reportable segment, focused on developing the Aurora Driver, its self-driving hardware, software, and data-services platform. This segment accounts for 100% of reported consolidated revenue; Aurora does not report separate revenue percentages for its product offerings.[23][25]

The platform is applied to freight trucking through Aurora Driver for Freight and to ride-hailing through Aurora Driver for Rides, with local-goods delivery described as a longer-term application. Freight launched commercially in April 2025, and Aurora began recognizing revenue from it in the second quarter of 2025. The filings do not provide a percentage revenue breakdown between Freight and Rides.[26] [23]

Company history

Aurora Innovation began operations in January 2017, founded by Chris Urmson, Sterling Anderson, and Drew Bagnell. In 2019 it agreed to acquire lidar company Blackmore, whose technology contributed to Aurora’s FirstLight lidar, introduced in 2020. In December 2020, Aurora announced its acquisition of Uber’s Advanced Technologies Group; it welcomed the team and technology in January 2021. Around the same time, Aurora announced partnerships with PACCAR to develop autonomous trucks and with Toyota and DENSO to develop self-driving vehicles.[5]

Aurora became a publicly traded company on November 3, 2021, following its business combination with Reinvent Technology Partners Y. In April 2023, it said the Aurora Driver had reached a feature-complete milestone, and later that month it entered a strategic agreement with Continental to support development of production hardware and safety systems. Aurora began regular driverless commercial freight deliveries in Texas in April 2025. By July 2026, it had begun deploying a second-generation driverless truck fleet as it expanded its commercial operations.[35] [5]
