Overview

AUTO1 Group is a European digital used-car marketplace founded in Berlin in 2012. Its platform connects consumers and professional dealers with used-car buying and selling, and the company also provides financing and digital services. Its main business segments are Merchant, serving professional dealers, and Retail, serving consumers.[1]

The company operates in more than 30 European countries and reported over 700 branches and vehicle drop-off points in its 2025 annual report.[1] AUTO1 describes its mission as transforming the used-car market and building the best way to buy, sell, and finance cars.[4]

Revenue was €8.173 billion for FY2025 and €2.437 billion for the first quarter of 2026; the company reported 8,600 employees at year-end 2025.[5] [1]

Products & services

AUTO1 Group’s products and services are organized around three customer-facing brands. AUTO1.com is a wholesale marketplace for professional car dealers, offering used-vehicle listings and sales alongside inspection, logistics, search and navigation, alerts, and delivery-status information. Merchant services also include vehicle-provision and auction fees, plus financing for selected dealers in eight countries.[7] The consumer car-buying service operates under wirkaufendeinauto.de and local sister brands: sellers can obtain an online estimate, submit vehicle details for a final price, and arrange handover at a nearby location. The group reported more than 700 branches and drop-off points across over 30 European countries in FY2025.[1][10]

Autohero is AUTO1’s online retail service for used cars, with online and mobile browsing and purchasing, vehicle inspection and reconditioning, delivery or pickup, trade-ins, and financing. The company also offers a 21-day money-back guarantee. Autohero customer instalment-purchase receivables are reported in Germany, Austria and Spain.[11] AUTO1 describes technology capabilities including data-based pricing, automated customer communication, and AI-assisted damage detection through AUTO1 Car Audit Technology (CAT), which is intended to identify visual defects and standardize vehicle listings. In a December 2025 company release, it reported CAT operating at five Autohero production centres and detecting around 90% of damage.[1]

For FY2025, AUTO1 reported group revenue of €8.173 billion: Merchant revenue was €6.414 billion (approximately 78.5%, calculated) and Retail revenue was €1.759 billion (approximately 21.5%, calculated). Merchant represented approximately 73% of gross profit and Retail approximately 27%, based on reported segment gross profit of €722.8 million and €267.8 million, respectively. These are segment-level figures, not revenue shares for individual brands.[15][16] [7]

Geographic presence

AUTO1 Group describes its operations as spanning more than 30 countries. Its FY2025 investor presentation identifies 23 markets in its used-car transaction-market set: Germany, France, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Sweden, Portugal, Poland, Finland, Denmark, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Croatia, Romania, Hungary, Bulgaria, Ukraine and Greece. The company’s consumer brands operate in nine European countries: Germany, France, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Sweden and Portugal.[17]

FY2025 sources reviewed do not provide revenue percentages by country or region; the reported revenue table is segmented by business line rather than geography.[5] The subsidiary lists show registered offices in locations including Berlin, Bratislava, Stockholm, Antwerp, Neuilly-sur-Seine, Amsterdam, Milan, Vienna, Madrid, Warsaw, Helsinki, Bucharest, Prague, Copenhagen and Vilnius, as well as Wilmington, Delaware. These are registered offices and should not be taken as a complete list of operating sites.[19][20]

AUTO1 reported 8,600 employees at year-end 2025; a country-level employee distribution was not identified in the sources reviewed.[21][3] [17]

Business segments

AUTO1 Group reports two business segments. **Merchant** is its B2B wholesale business, selling used vehicles to professional dealers through AUTO1.com; its activities also include dealer services such as auctions and logistics, and Merchant Financing. **Retail** sells used vehicles to private customers under the Autohero brand, with related financing and purchase services.[7]

In FY2025, Merchant generated €6,413.6 million, approximately **78.5%** of group revenue, and sold 741,000 vehicles; Retail generated €1,759.0 million, approximately **21.5%**, and sold 102,000 vehicles.[16] In the latest reported quarter, Q2 2026, Merchant revenue was approximately €1.8 billion and Retail revenue €598.3 million—roughly **75% and 25%** of segment revenue, respectively. Merchant sold 206,883 vehicles and Retail 33,415, approximately **86% and 14%** of Q2 unit volume. Q2 revenue mix is approximate because the release rounds Merchant and group revenue.[24] [7]

Company history

AUTO1 Group was founded in Berlin in August 2012 by Christian Bertermann and Hakan Koç. It launched AUTO1.com, its wholesale marketplace for professional dealers, in 2013, followed by AUTO1.com Remarketing for business sellers in 2015.[25]

In 2017, the company expanded into eight additional European countries and announced €360 million in debt and equity financing to support further growth. Autohero, its consumer retail brand, began scaling in 2020. That year, Koç left the Management Board and joined the Supervisory Board, while Bertermann remained CEO.[27]

AUTO1 Group completed its IPO on 4 February 2021, with its shares beginning to trade on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange’s Prime Standard.[30] [25]
