Company history

Avantor’s historical roots include the John Taylor Company, founded in 1852, and J.T. Baker Chemical Company, founded by John Townsend in 1904 to produce high-purity chemicals.[23] In 2010, New Mountain Capital acquired the business then known as Mallinckrodt Baker, Inc.[32]

A major turning point came on November 21, 2017, when Avantor completed its acquisition of VWR, expanding its laboratory products and distribution business.[33] Avantor closed its initial public offering on May 21, 2019, and began trading on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol AVTR.[34]

In 2021, the company completed acquisitions of Ritter GmbH and affiliates, followed by Masterflex, broadening its offerings in laboratory and bioprocessing products.[35][36] Avantor sold its Clinical Services business in October 2024.[37] Emmanuel Ligner became President and CEO in August 2025, succeeding Michael Stubblefield.[38] [32]
