Company history
Axalta’s coatings heritage traces to Herberts, a German coatings producer dating to 1866. DuPont acquired Herberts’ coatings businesses in the 1990s, and on February 1, 2013, Carlyle acquired DuPont Performance Coatings, forming the foundation of Axalta as an independent company.[26][27]
Axalta went public on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker AXTA in November 2014. In 2023, Chris Villavarayan became CEO and president, succeeding Robert Bryant.[28][29]
In 2024, Axalta completed its acquisition of The CoverFlexx Group, expanding its North American automotive refinish business. In November 2025, Axalta and AkzoNobel announced an all-stock merger-of-equals agreement; Axalta shareholders approved the proposal in August 2026, while the transaction remained subject to regulatory approvals and other closing conditions as of October 2, 2026.[30][31][32] [26][27][28][29][30][31][32]
