Overview

Badger Meter, Inc. is a water-technology company that develops and supplies flow measurement, water-quality, control and related systems. Its offerings include smart water meters and connected monitoring systems for utilities, as well as flow instrumentation for water and wastewater, HVAC and industrial applications. The company serves customers worldwide, with North America—particularly the United States—its largest market; it reports that approximately 95% of 2025 net sales were tied to water-related applications.[1]

Badger Meter describes its vision as delivering smart-water solutions that measure and protect water. Incorporated in 1905, the company reported 2025 net sales of $916.7 million and 2,477 employees at year-end.[5] [1]

Products & services

Badger Meter’s water-management products combine meters, communication technology, sensors, software and related support. Its Utility Water line includes residential and commercial meters, radio endpoints, water-quality instruments, and sewer and lift-station monitoring products. The ORION® family supports remote meter reading; ORION Cellular enables an AMI network-as-a-service model without requiring a utility to own the network infrastructure.[8]

Named metering products include E-Series G2®, a solid-state ultrasonic meter with no moving parts, and E-Series Ultrasonic Plus, which pairs ultrasonic metering with an integrated valve for remote flow control. Flow Instrumentation products—including ModMAG® electromagnetic and Dynasonics® ultrasonic meters—measure and control water, air, steam and other liquids or gases for commercial and industrial applications.[11]

Software and services include BEACON® SaaS, a cloud-hosted platform with configurable dashboards, alerts and tools for consumers to view and manage water use, as well as ongoing support and training. Monitoring instruments can measure turbidity, pH, chlorine, nitrates and other water-quality parameters; pressure and leak sensors provide alarms and event-location information, while sewer sensors monitor levels and hydrogen sulfide. In FY2025, Utility Water represented approximately 89% of net sales and Flow Instrumentation approximately 11%; separately, about 95% of net sales related to water applications.[16] [8]

It also lists sales and customer-service offices in Mexico, the United Kingdom, Singapore, China, Denmark and the United Arab Emirates, as well as other locations worldwide.[23] Named U.S. export-manufacturing locations are Milwaukee and Racine, Wisconsin; Tulsa, Oklahoma; Collegeville, Pennsylvania; and Melbourne, Florida. Its principal executive office is in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.[23][24] [21]

Business segments

Badger Meter reports one operating and reportable segment: water-management solutions. The company manages its operations together, citing similarities in products, production processes, customers and distribution methods; it does not report utility water and flow instrumentation as separate reportable segments.[25][26]

Its business is principally focused on smart water metering and related technologies, including meters, radio endpoints, software and services, as well as instruments and sensors for water distribution, water-quality monitoring and sewer-overflow detection and prevention.[2][27] It also sells flow-instrumentation products—including meters, valves and sensing instruments—with applications in water and wastewater, HVAC and corporate sustainability.[3]

For 2025, utility water sales were $816.1 million, approximately 89% of net sales, while global flow-instrumentation sales were $100.6 million, approximately 11%. These are product-line contributions, not separate reportable-segment shares.[6] [25]

Company history

Badger Meter traces its founding to 1905, when Milwaukee entrepreneurs Albert E. Gumz and Albert W. Wingender developed a frost-proof water meter.[28][29] In 2002, it introduced ORION, a radio-frequency system for drive-by water-meter reading.[30]

A leadership transition began in 2018, when Kenneth C. Bockhorst became president; he succeeded Richard A. Meeusen as CEO on January 1, 2019.[31][32] In 2020 and 2021, the company expanded into water-quality monitoring through acquisitions of Austrian sensor company s::can and Analytical Technology, Inc.[33][34]

Further expansion followed with the 2023 acquisition of UK-based water-monitoring company Syrinix and the 2024 purchase of select Trimble remote-monitoring assets and software.[35][36] In 2024, Badger Meter introduced BlueEdge, a suite combining hardware, connectivity, software and services.[37] It added sewer-monitoring capabilities with its 2025 acquisition of SmartCover and expanded that area further by completing its acquisition of UK-based UDlive in 2026.[38][39]
