BankUnited, Inc.

Updated

Overview

BankUnited, Inc. is a bank holding company whose subsidiary, BankUnited, N.A., provides consumer and commercial banking services. Its offerings include deposit accounts, commercial lending, and treasury, payment, and cash-management services.[1][2] The company’s core markets are Florida and the New York Tri-State area, with additional banking centers in Texas and Atlanta.[3][4]

BankUnited describes its approach as relationship-driven and focused on helping customers achieve financial goals; its About Us page does not state a formal mission.[5] As of June 30, 2026, it reported $34.9 billion in assets and 55 banking centers.[6] Its 2025 Form 10-K reported 1,803 employees at December 31, 2025.[7] [1]

Products & services

BankUnited’s commercial lending products include secured and unsecured lines of credit, formula-based credit lines, equipment loans, owner-occupied commercial real estate term loans and lines, mortgage warehouse lines, subscription finance facilities, letters of credit, commercial credit cards, SBA/USDA and Export-Import Bank financing, trade finance, and business-acquisition facilities. Its commercial real estate financing covers acquisition and refinancing of apartments, mixed-use properties, industrial buildings and warehouses, retail centers, single-tenant properties, offices, and hotels; offerings also include real-estate-secured credit lines, lending to REITs and institutional owners, and financing for some property development and construction.[8][9]

Through Pinnacle, the company provides state and local governments with equipment lease-purchase and loan agreements, as well as bond refundings. Its Bridge business has offered business-equipment loans and finance or operating leases, alongside franchise financing for acquisitions, expansion, refinancing, equipment, and development needs.[10][11] BankUnited also purchases, rather than originates, residential mortgages: primarily closed-end, first-lien jumbo loans for owner-occupied home purchase or refinancing, and non-performing FHA/VA-insured mortgages that may re-perform.[12]

Deposit and transaction services include commercial and consumer checking, money-market accounts, savings accounts, certificates of deposit, treasury and cash-management services, and insured cash-sweep programs. Treasury capabilities include the Lynx platform for account access, ACH and wire payments, transfers, reporting and fraud controls; receivables services include lockbox and deposit reconciliation, while Positive Pay and Reverse Positive Pay support review of suspect checks and pay-or-return decisions.[2][13] Consumer digital banking includes bill pay, transfers, mobile check deposit, alerts, Zelle® and spending insights.[14] The reviewed product disclosures do not provide product-level revenue or performance percentages.[8][2] [8]

Geographic presence

BankUnited, Inc.’s 2025 Form 10-K describes its principal banking markets as Florida and the New York Tri-State area, with Florida its largest market. Its named Florida markets are Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach, Tampa, Orlando, and Jacksonville. At December 31, 2025, the company reported 55 banking centers in Florida, New York, Texas, and Atlanta, Georgia; it does not specify the center count by state or market.[1][4]

The company is headquartered in Miami Lakes, Florida. It also identifies regional commercial banking offices in Atlanta, Charlotte, and Morristown, New Jersey, and leased office space in New York, New Jersey, other Florida locations, Dallas, Atlanta, and North Carolina; subsidiaries also lease space in Baltimore and Scottsdale. Some lending and deposit products are delivered through national platforms. The reviewed filing does not provide geographic revenue or employee-distribution percentages.[17] [1]

Business segments

BankUnited reports one operating and reportable segment, with no distinct name for it; the segment comprises the company’s consolidated banking business. Although management monitors revenue streams and loan and deposit balances across business lines, the company says those lines serve similar customers and provide comparable products and services using similar processes and platforms, and it does not report separate results for them.[19]

The segment’s activities include consumer and commercial banking for individuals, small businesses, middle-market companies, large corporations and institutions. Its footprint includes Florida, the New York Tri-State area, Dallas, Atlanta and Charlotte, alongside certain nationally offered commercial products and online consumer deposits.[1] Products and lending activities include deposits, treasury and cash-management services, and commercial lending.[2][20]

Because this is the sole reportable segment, it represents 100% of consolidated results; separate contributions by business line are not disclosed. In 2025, consolidated net interest income before provision plus noninterest income was $1,093.219 million, and consolidated net income was $268.353 million; each is attributable to the sole reported segment.[21] [19]

Company history

BankUnited’s predecessor was established in Florida as United Savings Association in 1984 and adopted the BankUnited, FSB name in 1993.[24] The present BankUnited, Inc. emerged from the financial-crisis-era resolution of BankUnited, FSB: on May 21, 2009, the failed bank was placed in FDIC receivership, and a newly formed BankUnited acquired substantially all of its assets and assumed deposits and other liabilities. Investors led by John Kanas provided $900 million; Kanas became chairman and CEO.[25]

BankUnited completed its initial public offering in January 2011, with trading beginning on January 28.[28] It expanded into New York through its 2012 acquisition of Herald National Bank, then broadened its small-business finance activities by acquiring CertusHoldings’ Small Business Finance Unit in 2015.[29][30] In 2016, the company announced that COO Rajinder P. Singh would succeed Kanas as president and CEO effective January 2017; Singh became chairman in 2019.[31][32] [26]
