Company history

Bausch + Lomb was founded in Rochester, New York, in 1853, when John Jacob Bausch opened an optical-goods shop with financial backing from Henry Lomb, who later became his partner. The company expanded into microscope production in 1875 and made Ray-Ban aviator goggles for military pilots in 1936. In 1971, it launched SofLens, which the company describes as the first mass-produced soft contact lens in the United States.[3]

In 1997, Bausch + Lomb expanded into ophthalmic surgery by acquiring Storz Ophthalmics and Chiron Vision. Valeant Pharmaceuticals agreed to acquire the company in 2013 and completed the acquisition that August, making Bausch + Lomb a Valeant division.[3]

Bausch + Lomb began trading publicly on the NYSE and TSX in May 2022, while remaining majority-owned by Bausch Health.[28] In 2023, it acquired Johnson & Johnson Vision’s Blink eye- and contact-lens-drop product line and Novartis’s XIIDRA and related ophthalmology assets, broadening its eye-care and dry-eye businesses.[29][14] [28]
