Company profile

Beam Therapeutics Inc.

Updated

Overview

Beam Therapeutics Inc. is a clinical-stage biotechnology company developing precision genetic medicines using a proprietary base-editing platform, designed to make targeted single-letter DNA changes without double-strand breaks. Its development work includes genetic diseases such as sickle cell disease, beta-thalassemia, alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency and glycogen storage disease type 1a. The company’s stated vision is to provide lifelong cures for people with serious diseases.[1]

Beam is based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and also has a manufacturing facility in Durham, North Carolina. For FY2025, it reported $139.743 million in license and collaboration revenue; it reported no product-sales revenue to date in its Q2 2026 filing. Revenue for the six months ended June 30, 2026 was $32.228 million. A third-party source estimates 511 employees at year-end 2025.[5] [1]

Products & services

Beam Therapeutics’ investigational products include **risto-cel (ristoglogene autogetemcel; formerly BEAM-101)**, an autologous hematopoietic stem-cell therapy for sickle cell disease. Its base edits are designed to mimic naturally occurring variants associated with hereditary persistence of fetal hemoglobin. The Phase 1/2 BEACON trial completed dosing of adult and adolescent patients; the company said a biologics license application could be submitted as early as year-end 2026.[11]

**BEAM-302** is a liver-targeted lipid nanoparticle (LNP) base-editing candidate intended to correct the SERPINA1 E342K/PiZ mutation that causes alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency. Its Phase 1/2 study was ongoing, and a global pivotal cohort began dosing in July 2026. **BEAM-301** uses liver-targeted LNP delivery to correct the G6PC R83C mutation associated with glycogen storage disease Ia; its Phase 1/2 trial was dosing patients in cohort two. **BEAM-304** is a liver-targeted candidate designed to correct disease-causing PAH mutations in phenylketonuria; after FDA clearance of its investigational new drug application in June 2026, the company began start-up for a Phase 1/2 trial initially focused on the R408W mutation.[14]

**BEAM-103** is an anti-CD117 monoclonal antibody being studied as a non-genotoxic conditioning agent to support potential ex vivo and in vivo sickle cell disease therapies; it is an enabling candidate rather than a gene-editing treatment. Beam’s base-editing platform uses CRISPR-guided editing designed to modify individual DNA bases without making double-stranded DNA breaks. Its LNP platform delivers base-editor mRNA and guide RNA for in vivo editing. The company reported no product-sales revenue to date, and its disclosures did not identify a separate productized service offering.[21] [11]

Geographic presence

Beam Therapeutics’ disclosed operating footprint is in the United States. Its principal executive office is in Cambridge, Massachusetts; the 2025 Form 10-K reports about 130,258 square feet of office and laboratory space there. The company also has a 100,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, for manufacturing capabilities supporting its programs.[23] Beam identifies Cambridge as its biotech hub and Research Triangle Park as its manufacturing-facility location.[8][9]

Beam reports one operating segment and describes its operations as exclusively in the United States; the cited disclosures do not provide revenue by country or region.[26][27] The 2025 Form 10-K reports 511 full-time team members, with counts by job function, but does not give employee numbers by location or geography.[28] [23]

Business segments

Beam Therapeutics reports a single operating and reportable segment: its consolidated business. It does not report separate segments for individual programs, therapeutic areas, or delivery approaches. The sole segment therefore represents 100% of reported operations, but the company does not disclose revenue percentages by program or other business category.[29][26]

The company’s segment activities encompass development of precision genetic medicines using its base-editing platform, including ex vivo and in vivo approaches. These are descriptions of its platform and activities, not separately reported segments.[30] [29]

Company history

Beam Therapeutics was incorporated and began operations in January 2017. Its public launch followed in May 2018, when co-founders David R. Liu, Feng Zhang, and J. Keith Joung announced the company’s focus on base-editing technology.[31][32]

Beam went public on Nasdaq in February 2020. In 2021, it acquired Guide Therapeutics to add delivery technology and a lipid library. In 2022, it entered a multi-target in-vivo base-editing research collaboration with Pfizer and helped launch Orbital Therapeutics to develop RNA medicines.[33]

The company moved base-editing programs into clinical testing in 2023: it reported first-patient dosing in the BEAM-201 trial that September and in the BEAM-101 sickle-cell trial in the fourth quarter. In 2024, it reported first-patient dosing in the BEAM-302 trial for alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency.[37] [31]
