BLACKBERRY Ltd

Overview

BlackBerry Ltd. is a Waterloo, Ontario-based software company serving enterprises and governments. Its business combines embedded software, including QNX, with secure communications software; its products are used in areas such as automotive, medical devices, industrial systems, and government and critical-infrastructure communications. BlackBerry describes its purpose as “Powering the world around us with secure software.” [1]

The company reports three operating segments: QNX, Secure Communications, and Licensing. It has a global presence, with offices in North America, Europe, and Asia. In FY2026, revenue was $549.1 million, and BlackBerry reported 1,749 regular employees, contract workers, and student workers as of February 28, 2026.[2] [1]

Products & services

BlackBerry’s QNX portfolio provides embedded software for safety-critical and mission-critical systems. Named products include QNX RTOS, QNX Hypervisor for Safety, QNX Software Development Platform, QNX OS for Safety, QNX Sound and QNX Cabin. The portfolio includes a pre-certified microkernel and qualified toolchains supporting safety standards such as ISO 26262; its hypervisor isolates safety-critical systems from faults in other systems. Developer tools include the QNX OS and Tool Suite, Visual Studio Code toolkit and Momentics IDE. QNX is used in automotive and in areas including medical devices, robotics, rail, industrial automation, aerospace and defense.[7]

Other QNX products include BlackBerry Radar, an asset-monitoring and telematics solution combining devices with cloud dashboards for asset location and sensor reporting, alerts and fleet analytics, and Certicom.[10][11] Secure Communications products include BlackBerry UEM, which manages and secures devices, applications, identities, content and endpoints across major operating systems, with containerization and compliance capabilities; AtHoc, a crisis-communications platform offering incident management, encrypted messaging and emergency notifications, with cloud and on-premises deployment; and SecuSUITE. The portfolio also includes Dynamics, Workspaces for secure enterprise file sharing, and BBM Enterprise for secure messaging, voice and video.[12]

BlackBerry’s segment revenues are principally generated through software licences bundled with support, maintenance and professional services; QNX also earns volume-based royalties. In FY2026, QNX generated $268.0 million (about 48.8% of the three reported segments’ combined revenue), Secure Communications $258.9 million (about 47.1%), and Licensing $22.2 million (about 4.0%). These are segment-level figures, not revenues for individual products.[12] [7]

Geographic presence

In FY2026, ended February 28, 2026, BlackBerry reported revenue of $245.2 million from North America (44.7%), $193.7 million from Europe, the Middle East and Africa (35.3%), and $110.2 million from other regions (20.0%). The company reports regional rather than country-level revenue. Its North America figure includes all Licensing revenue, attributed there because the patent portfolio and licensing arrangements are global.[18]

BlackBerry is headquartered in Waterloo, Ontario, and also identifies a significant leased facility in Ottawa. Its facilities span the United States, Asia-Pacific, Europe and the Middle East, supporting functions including engineering, sales, marketing, research and development, and operations. The company’s office directory lists locations including Plano and Novi in the United States; Düsseldorf, Hanover and Munich in Germany; and Tokyo, Seoul, Kuala Lumpur/Cyberjaya, Hyderabad, Beijing and Shanghai.[21]

As of February 28, 2026, BlackBerry had 1,749 regular employees, contract workers and student workers across 15 countries: approximately 57% in Canada, 14% in the United States and 29% outside North America. The filing does not provide a further breakdown of that remaining share.[23] [18]

Business segments

For FY2026, BlackBerry reported three business segments. QNX develops embedded software for safety-critical and other mission-critical applications, including in automotive, medical, industrial, robotics, rail, and aerospace and defense markets; the division also includes BlackBerry Radar and Certicom. QNX generated US$268.0 million, approximately 48.8% of the company’s US$549.1 million in revenue.[2][17]

Secure Communications provides security-focused software, including unified endpoint management (UEM), SecuSUITE, and AtHoc. It generated US$258.9 million, approximately 47.1% of revenue.[24][17] Licensing manages and monetizes BlackBerry’s patent portfolio through licensing, sales, and enforcement; it generated US$22.2 million, approximately 4.0% of revenue.[25][17] The fiscal year ended February 28, 2026.[5] [2]

Company history

Research In Motion (RIM) was founded in 1984 by Mike Lazaridis and Douglas Fregin. In 1996, it introduced the Inter@ctive Pager, an early wireless communications device.[26][27]

In 1999, RIM introduced the BlackBerry 850, bringing wireless email to a handheld pager. The 2002 BlackBerry 5810 added phone functionality, extending the product line beyond messaging devices.[28][29]

In 2010, RIM agreed to acquire QNX Software Systems, marking a significant expansion into embedded software. On January 30, 2013, the company changed its name to BlackBerry and launched the BlackBerry 10 platform and new smartphones.[30]

In 2016, BlackBerry ended internal hardware development and shifted its focus toward software, security and services. It completed the acquisition of cybersecurity company Cylance in 2019. In 2023, after dropping plans for an IoT subsidiary IPO, BlackBerry organized its business into standalone IoT and Cybersecurity divisions; John Giamatteo became CEO that December.[32] [1]
