Block describes its purpose in terms of economic empowerment and increasing access to the global economy [2]. Founded as Square in 2009, the company adopted the name Block in 2021 [3].

Products & services

Block’s Square products serve sellers with integrated point-of-sale and commerce tools. Square Point of Sale is a customizable commerce app, with software for in-person, online and remote sales that can synchronize inventory, orders and customer information across channels. Square Payments processes card-present and card-not-present transactions, including payments made in person, online, on mobile and through invoices; Square also provides reporting and analytics, settlement, inventory and employee management, buyer-engagement tools, and website and online-store capabilities. Square Loans offers eligible sellers loans repaid either through a share of processed receivables or fixed monthly payments.[1]

Cash App combines peer-to-peer payments with consumer financial products, including balance storage, direct deposit, spending, saving, investing, borrowing and bitcoin purchases. Its Cash App Card is a Visa debit card linked to a customer’s Cash App balance and can be used for purchases and ATM withdrawals. Cash App Borrow provides eligible customers short-term, fixed-fee loans; its underwriting uses proprietary models and Cash App transaction data, as well as the Cash App Score framework for underwriting, credit-limit management and eligibility.[11]

Block’s buy-now-pay-later products include Afterpay, which generally lets consumers divide purchases into three or four installments, typically due every two weeks. Afterpay Card and Afterpay Plus Card support in-store “pay in 4,” while Pay Monthly offers eligible larger purchases repayment terms of 3, 6, 12 or 24 months. Cash App also provides bitcoin purchases and storage in Block’s digital wallets.[16] The company reports Square and Cash App as its reportable segments, but the cited reporting does not specify individual products’ shares of company performance.[1][9] [1]
