Company history

BrightSpring’s origins trace to Res-Care, founded by James R. Fornear in 1974.[23] A second predecessor, PharMerica, was formed in 2007 through the combination of the institutional-pharmacy businesses of AmerisourceBergen and Kindred Healthcare.[24] Onex took ResCare private in 2010, while PharMerica was acquired by a KKR-led group in 2017.[25][26]

ResCare adopted the BrightSpring Health Services name in 2018, the same year BrightSpring and PharMerica announced plans to combine.[27][28] The combination was completed in March 2019, bringing the provider-services and pharmacy businesses together under BrightSpring.[29] BrightSpring expanded its rehabilitation services in 2022 through the acquisition of Progressive Rehabilitation Associates.[30]

BrightSpring completed an initial public offering and began trading on Nasdaq in January 2024.[31] In 2025, it agreed to sell ResCare Community Living to Sevita; the sale closed on March 30, 2026.[32][33] [23]
