Company history
Brookfield’s corporate lineage traces to São Paulo Tramway, Light & Power Co., founded in 1899; this marks the predecessor lineage, not the incorporation of today’s Brookfield Asset Management Ltd.[47] The business became Brascan Limited in 1969, combined with The Edper Group as EdperBrascan in 1997, and was renamed Brascan Corporation in 2000.[48] In 2001, Brookfield began a strategic transformation into a global alternative asset manager and launched its first private-equity fund; Brascan adopted the name Brookfield Asset Management Inc. in 2005.[47][48]
The predecessor business expanded internationally over the following years, including U.S. expansion beginning in 1996, growth in renewables from 1999, a stake in London’s Canary Wharf in 2003, and the 2007 acquisition of Australian property and construction group Multiplex.[47][49] In 2022, Brookfield Asset Management Inc.—which became Brookfield Corporation—separated its asset-management business into the newly formed Brookfield Asset Management Ltd. and Brookfield Asset Management ULC. The separation closed on December 9; Brookfield Corporation retained a 75% interest, while BAM Ltd. held 25%, and BAM shares began trading on the NYSE and TSX on December 12.[50][51][52] In February 2026, Brookfield announced Connor Teskey’s appointment as BAM CEO, with Bruce Flatt remaining board chair.[53] [50][51][47][48][49][52][53]
