Overview

BT Group plc is a UK-based telecommunications and technology group. Its businesses serve consumers, companies and public services, international customers, and communications providers through Openreach, which wholesales fixed-access infrastructure to more than 700 providers across the UK.[1]

Its services include fixed and mobile connectivity, broadband and fibre, communications and technology services, and consumer television and entertainment. BT operates in around 180 countries, with a strong UK customer base.[2] The company states its purpose as “we connect for good.” [5]

BT reports FY26 revenue of £19.7 billion and describes its workforce as 100,000 people.[6][7] [1]

Products & services

BT Group’s products and services include fixed subscriptions for broadband, television and fixed telephony, with calls, connections, line rental and calling features; mobile subscriptions offer postpaid and prepaid voice, SMS and data. Its business services include networked IT, managed network services, software design and build, mobile backhaul, security, and media and broadcast services. Equipment offerings include mobile handsets, broadband routers and set-top boxes, alongside consumer electronics, gaming and insurance.[8][9]

BT Active Intelligence uses aggregated, anonymised network insights to create decision-support tools, including applications for economic monitoring and audience analysis.[10] Openreach’s full-fibre (FTTP) network reached 23 million premises and connected more than 8.8 million by FY26.[11]

For FY26, the reported product mix within BT’s International segment was Connectivity 41%, Voice & Collaboration 15%, Security 18%, Mobility and Services 13%, and Devices 13%; these figures are segment mix, not the mix of total Group revenue.[12] [8]

Geographic presence

BT GRP’s business is primarily UK-based. For the year ended 31 March 2026, it reported £15,445m in adjusted UK service revenue; this is a UK service-revenue measure, not a geographic share of total group revenue.[13][14] At year-end, the group had 58.9k UK FTEs and 18.3k non-UK FTEs, out of 77.2k total.[15]

The group’s FY2026 related-undertaking schedules list entities and addresses in multiple countries, including Finland, France, Germany, China, India, Hong Kong, Ghana and the UAE; these listings indicate a legal-entity and address footprint rather than a measure of active operations or revenue by country.[16] Its UK network footprint included more than 22.9m premises passed with fibre to the premises, of which 6.3m were in more rural and hard-to-reach areas; its UK 5G footprint reached 90.5%.[22] [13]

Business segments

Finbar describes its activities as developing medium- to high-density residential apartments and commercial property in Western Australia. The available official FY2025 disclosures support these as business activity areas, but do not establish a separately quantified segment breakdown or verified reportable-segment names.[25]

FY2025 consolidated revenue was approximately A$284.5 million; the available disclosures do not provide verified revenue by activity, so segment contribution percentages cannot be calculated.[26] [25][26]

Company history

BT traces its origins to the Electric Telegraph Company, founded in 1846. In 1870, the Post Office took over inland telegraphs; it later consolidated telephone services, including taking over the National Telephone Company in 1912.[27][28]

The Post Office became a public corporation in 1969. Its telecommunications business adopted the name British Telecom in 1980 and separated from the Post Office in 1981; British Telecommunications plc was established in 1984, when 50.2% of its shares were sold to the public. The company adopted BT as its trading name in 1991.[29][27]

BT Group was formed in 2001 following the demerger of its wireless business, which became mmO2. In 2016, BT completed its acquisition of EE. Openreach became a legally separate, wholly owned BT subsidiary with separate governance in 2018.[29] [27]
