Overview

Builders FirstSource, Inc., formed in 1998, is a U.S. building products company that supplies and manufactures building materials, manufactured components, and construction services for professional homebuilders, subcontractors, remodelers, and consumers.[1][2] The company is focused primarily on the professional segment of residential construction and repair/remodeling and uses an integrated model that combines manufacturing, supply, and installation of structural and related building products.[3][4] Its offerings span manufactured components such as roof and floor trusses and wall panels, windows, doors and millwork, specialty building products and services, and lumber and sheet goods; it also provides software solutions for the building products industry through Paradigm.[5]

Builders FirstSource describes itself as the nation’s largest supplier of structural building products, value-added components, and services for professional new residential construction and repair/remodeling markets, with a broad U.S. footprint.[10] As of year-end 2024, it operated approximately 590 locations in 43 states, including operations in 48 of the top 50 and 91 of the top 100 U.S. metropolitan statistical areas.[11][12] The company had about 29,000 employees and generated $16.4 billion in net sales in 2024.[13][14] In its own stated priorities, it emphasizes exceptional customer service and innovative solutions and says its goal is to be recognized by customers as a preferred supplier.

Products & services

Builders FirstSource’s product offering is organized into four categories. Manufactured products include wood floor and roof trusses, wall panels, engineered wood components designed, cut and assembled for each home, and Ready-Frame®, its proprietary whole-house framing system that designs, pre-cuts, labels and bundles lumber into customized framing packages. The company states these products are intended to reduce labor, waste and jobsite time; it also notes that engineered wood beams can provide greater structural strength than conventional framing materials, enabling more open floor plans, and that engineered wood floors and open-web floor trusses are stronger and straighter than conventionally framed floors. In 2024, manufactured products represented 24.0% of net sales.[5][17]

Its windows, doors and millwork category includes the manufacturing, assembly and distribution of windows, assembly and distribution of interior and exterior door units, and a range of millwork products. Builders FirstSource says it manufactures a portion of its vinyl windows in Houston, Texas; its described process includes cutting and joining vinyl extrusions to form frames and sashes, producing insulating glass units from cut sheet glass and sealing compound, then glazing the units into the frame and installing balances and locks. Pre-hung doors are sold as door slabs with hinges and jambs already attached; the company describes machining door slabs and pre-cut jambs to bore hardware holes and attach jambs and hinges, with interior units receiving casing and exterior units optionally including sidelights, transoms and a sill. Millwork offerings include pre-hung door systems, mouldings, custom and premium windows, finish hardware, stair parts, mantels, column units, and Synboard®, an extruded PVC product described as more durable than wood and requiring no ongoing caulking or painting. This category represented 25.7% of 2024 net sales.[18]

Specialty building products and services include siding, exterior trim, metal studs, cement, roofing, insulation, wallboard, ceilings, cabinets and hardware, along with turn-key framing, shell construction, design assistance and professional installation across product categories. The company also offers software through Paradigm, including drafting, estimating, quoting and virtual home design services, and states that it uses energy-efficiency software to help builders design homes and meet energy-rating requirements. Lumber and lumber sheet goods include dimensional lumber, plywood and OSB used in on-site house framing. In 2024, specialty building products and services accounted for 24.7% of net sales and lumber and lumber sheet goods accounted for 25.6%.

Geographic presence

Builders FirstSource’s geographic footprint is concentrated in the United States, where it operates approximately 590 locations in 43 states and has a presence in 48 of the top 50 and 91 of the top 100 U.S. metropolitan statistical areas. Its locations are organized into three internal geographic divisions—East, Central and West—and its foreign jurisdictions disclosure is listed as “not applicable,” indicating no separately reported non-U.S. operating geography.[11]

The company does not separately disclose revenue by country or region; instead, management reviews the business on a consolidated basis and aggregates its geographic divisions into one reportable segment. Its principal executive offices are in Irving, Texas, and it maintains a broad U.S. network of manufacturing and distribution facilities, including about 190 actively operating owned facilities and about 400 actively operating leased facilities. The filing also cites Houston, Texas, as a manufacturing location for vinyl windows that primarily serves the Texas market.

Business segments

Builders FirstSource officially reports a single reportable segment. Internally, it manages the business through three geographic operating segments—East, Central, and West—organized to address local customer needs, but these are aggregated into one reportable segment because the operations have similar products and services, customers, distribution methods, and economic characteristics; as a result, the company does not separately disclose revenue contribution for East, Central, or West [30][31].

The most detailed quantified breakdown the company provides is by major product category rather than by reportable segment. In 2024, manufactured products represented about 24.0% of net sales and include factory-built framing products such as wood floor and roof trusses, wall panels, engineered wood, and Ready-Frame framing packages [32]. Windows, doors and millwork accounted for about 25.7% and include window manufacturing/assembly/distribution, interior and exterior door units, and millwork such as interior trim and custom features [33][6]. Specialty building products and services were about 24.7% and include products such as siding, trim, metal studs, cement, roofing, insulation, wallboard, ceilings, cabinets, and hardware, along with services such as turn-key framing, shell construction, design assistance, professional installation, and Paradigm software solutions [33][18]. Lumber and lumber sheet goods were about 25.6% and consist mainly of dimensional lumber, plywood, and OSB used in on-site house framing [33][8].

Company history

Builders FirstSource was formed in 1998 as BSL Holdings, Inc., and changed its name to Builders FirstSource, Inc. on October 13, 1999 [1]. The company entered the public markets in 2005, after filing for an initial public offering in February and pricing its shares in June 2005 [34][35].

A major expansion came in July 2015, when Builders FirstSource completed its acquisition of ProBuild, materially increasing its national scale [36]. In January 2021, it completed its all-stock combination with BMC Stock Holdings, another transformational deal that further expanded the company’s footprint and product offering [37]. Later in 2021, the company added software capabilities through the acquisition of WTS Paradigm, extending its acquisition-led development beyond traditional building-products distribution [38].
