Products & services

Burlington sells women’s ready-to-wear, men’s and youth apparel, baby products, beauty products, footwear, accessories, home goods, toys, gifts and coats. Its merchandise consists of branded, in-season goods, which it describes as priced up to 60% below other retailers’ prices. The company buys from manufacturers and vendors, with buyers evaluating trends and seeking to purchase much of the merchandise in season.[5]

In FY2025, merchandise sales were distributed across accessories and shoes (28%), ladies’ apparel (20%), home (20%), men’s apparel (17%), kids’ apparel and baby (12%), and outerwear (3%).[8] The fiscal year ended January 31, 2026.[9]

Customer-facing services include layaway at select locations, gift cards, and a store locator.[10] [5]

Geographic presence

Burlington Stores operates and generates all of its revenue in the United States; it reports one operating segment and does not provide a more detailed geographic revenue breakdown. As of November 1, 2025, its 1,211 stores spanned 46 states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico.[13][14] Its FY2024 store-count table lists the number of locations by state and territory.[15]

The company’s corporate headquarters and campus are in Burlington/Florence, New Jersey, with an office at its Edgewater Park distribution center and buying offices in New York City and Los Angeles.[16] In FY2024, six distribution centers—in New Jersey (Edgewater Park, Burlington, and Logan) and California (San Bernardino, Redlands, and Riverside)—shipped more than 99% of merchandise units to stores. Burlington also acquired a distribution center in Ellabell, Georgia, which it expected to become operational in FY2026.[17][18] [13]

Business segments

Burlington Stores, Inc. reports one reportable segment, managed on a consolidated basis, and does not separately name it. The segment comprises the company’s off-price retail business, selling apparel and related merchandise including footwear, accessories, home goods, toys, gifts, and coats.[19][20]

The sole reportable segment accounts for approximately 100% of reported revenue. For the fiscal year ended January 31, 2026, Burlington reported total revenue of $11.567 billion.[19][21] [19]

Company history

Burlington Stores traces its origins to 1972, when the first Burlington Coat Factory opened in Burlington, New Jersey, selling discounted coats and outerwear. The company was founded by the Milstein family. In the following decades it broadened its merchandise beyond coats; by 1989 it had 134 stores in 37 states, and by 2005 it had 362 stores in 42 states.[22][23]

In 2006, affiliates of Bain Capital acquired the company in a transaction that took it private. Burlington returned to the public markets in October 2013, listing on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol BURL. By early 2014, it operated 521 stores and sold a wider range of apparel, footwear, accessories, baby products, and home goods.[23]

A later leadership milestone came in September 2019, when Michael O’Sullivan began serving as CEO.[27][28] [22]
