Its core offering combines handheld ultrasound systems based on proprietary Ultrasound-on-Chip technology with cloud-connected software, services, and education. Its defining products include the Butterfly iQ+ and iQ3 imaging systems.[1] The company describes its mission as making medical imaging accessible worldwide.[4]

Butterfly serves healthcare settings including hospitals, clinics, emergency medical services, and global-health programs. As of January 2026, it sold products in more than 30 countries and had approximately 220 employees.[5] Revenue was $97.6 million for the year ended December 31, 2025.[8] [1]

Products & services

Butterfly Network’s handheld ultrasound products include the Butterfly iQ+ and iQ3, portable scanners built on its semiconductor-based Ultrasound-on-Chip™ technology for whole-body imaging from a single probe. The iQ+ operates at 1–10 MHz; the iQ3 operates at 1–12 MHz and adds a smaller design, greater processing power, advanced 3D imaging, iQ Slice™ capture of up to 46 ultrasound slices, and iQ Fan™ virtual fanning for lung imaging. Both work with the Butterfly app on compatible mobile devices and provide more than 20 anatomical presets and up to six imaging modes.[9]

Other product capabilities include automated bladder-volume calculation with 3D visualization, NeedleViz™ and Biplane Imaging™ for line placement, and an Auto B-line Counter. The iQ+ Bladder is a bladder-scanning package combining a probe and software with a cart, tablet and power splitter. Software and services include cloud-connected subscriptions, clinical workflow integration, Compass AI™ health-system software, and ScanLab™ educational tools with guided scanning and AI image-quality feedback. Butterfly also licenses its Ultrasound-on-Chip technology through Butterfly Embedded™ for co-development with third parties.[11]

In the second quarter of 2026, product revenue was $15.720 million (48.2% of revenue) and software and other services revenue was $16.892 million (51.8%). For the first half of 2026, the respective figures were $30.373 million (51.4%) and $28.769 million (48.6%). The company reports these categories rather than revenue percentages for individual products.[21] [9]

Geographic presence

Butterfly Network markets its products worldwide through a targeted sales organization in the United States and direct sales and distributors internationally. It sells directly in Germany and the United Kingdom, while distribution partners and e-commerce extend its reach to approximately 40 countries; the company does not provide a country-by-country revenue breakdown.[22][23]

For 2025, reported revenue was $77.437 million in the United States and $20.173 million internationally, approximately 79.3% and 20.7% of total revenue, respectively.[24] Its principal executive office is in Burlington, Massachusetts.[25] As of December 31, 2025, about 70 employees globally worked in sales, sales support, and marketing; a regional breakdown was not reported.[28]

Its supply chain includes manufacturing in Taiwan and Thailand: a custom transducer module’s semiconductor chip and lens are made in Taiwan and sent to Thailand for assembly, and contract manufacturer Benchmark Electronics manufactures, tests, and ships many Butterfly probes from facilities in Thailand.[29][30] [22]

Business segments

Butterfly Network reports one formal reportable segment, covering the development, manufacture, and sale of its products, software, and other services. Its CEO, identified as the chief operating decision maker, assesses performance and allocates resources using consolidated results. The company’s product and service categories are revenue disaggregation, not separate reportable segments.[31][32]

The business combines handheld ultrasound devices using its Ultrasound-on-Chip technology with software and other services. In 2025, product revenue was $63.443 million (approximately 65% of total revenue), while software and other services generated $34.167 million (approximately 35%). For the first half of 2026, product revenue was $30.373 million (approximately 51%), and software and other services revenue was $28.769 million (approximately 49%).[1] [31]

Company history

Butterfly Network was founded in 2011 by Jonathan Rothberg. In October 2017, its Butterfly iQ ultrasound-on-a-chip system received FDA clearance; the company launched the handheld, single-probe product commercially in 2018. It expanded beyond human care with international availability and a veterinary version in 2019, then introduced the updated iQ+ in 2020.[35]

In February 2021, Butterfly completed a business combination with Longview Acquisition Corp. and began trading on the New York Stock Exchange as BFLY. The company expanded into enterprise ultrasound software with Butterfly Blueprint in 2022 and received FDA clearance for its AI-enabled Auto B-line Counter in 2023. FDA cleared its third-generation iQ3 device in January 2024; that year Butterfly also introduced iQ+ Bladder, its first specialty bladder-scanning product.[35] [35]
