Overview
Cabot Corporation is a global specialty chemicals and performance materials company. Its products include reinforcing and specialty carbons, specialty compounds, conductive additives, carbon nanotubes, fumed metal oxides, inkjet colorants and aerogel. Its two reporting segments are Reinforcement Materials and Performance Chemicals, serving applications including tires and other industrial rubber products.[1][2][3][4][5]
Cabot states its purpose as “Creating materials that improve daily life and enable a more sustainable future.” [6] Founded in 1882, the company operates manufacturing facilities in the United States and more than 20 other countries.[1] For fiscal 2025, it reported $3.713 billion in net sales and other operating revenues and approximately 4,100 employees across the Americas, Asia Pacific and EMEA.[7][8] [6]
Products & services
Cabot’s products include reinforcing carbon blacks, engineered elastomer composites, specialty carbons and compounds, battery materials, fumed metal oxides, aerogel, and inkjet colorants. Reinforcing carbon blacks are tailored by particle and aggregate size, structure, and surface chemistry; in tires they support tread durability, traction, and lower rolling resistance, while in industrial rubber goods they can provide strength, fluid resistance, and electrical properties. E2C® engineered elastomer composites combine carbon and rubber to improve wear and fatigue performance and reduce rolling resistance.[9][3][4]
Specialty carbons provide color, conductivity, UV protection, and other formulation properties; Cabot’s specialty compounds and masterbatches combine carbons with polymers and additives to facilitate dispersion and handling. Battery products include conductive carbons, nanotubes and nanostructures, blends, and fumed alumina for lithium-ion battery applications. Fumed silica and alumina serve as reinforcing, thickening, abrasive, suspending, or barrier agents; ENOVA® aerogel is used for thermal insulation, including battery thermal-runaway management. CAB-O-JET® pigment-based colorants are designed to deliver print color, sharpness, and durability while maintaining printhead reliability.[10][11][12][13][14][15][16]
Named product families include CAB-O-SIL® fumed silica, VULCAN® conductive carbon blacks, PLASBLAK® and TECHBLAK® black masterbatches, CABELEC® conductive compounds, LITX® battery conductive carbons, ENOVA® aerogel, and CAB-O-JET® inkjet colorants. One published ENOVA IC3100 specification gives thermal conductivity of 0.012 W/m·K at 25°C.[17][18][19][20][21][22][23][24]
Cabot also performs toll conversion, processing customer-provided feedstocks for a fee, and offers sales, technical-service, and customer-service support. In FY2025, Reinforcement Materials generated $2.341 billion, about 65% of combined segment revenue, and Performance Chemicals generated $1.250 billion, about 35%; these are segment—not individual product—shares.[25][26][27] [9][3][4][10][11][12][13][14][15][16][25][27][27][27][17][18][19][20][21][22][23][24][26][17][18][19][20][21][22][23][24][26]
Geographic presence
Cabot’s operations span the Americas, Asia Pacific, and Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA), with manufacturing facilities in the U.S. and more than 20 other countries. Its manufacturing footprint includes sites in China, the Netherlands, Germany, the U.K., Belgium, Canada, Indonesia and the UAE, among others; an affiliate also operates a fumed-metal-oxide plant in India.[1][28]
In fiscal 2025, external-customer segment revenue was $1.317 billion in the Americas (36.7%), $1.401 billion in Asia Pacific (39.0%), and $873 million in EMEA (24.3%). China accounted for approximately 25% of FY2025 revenue, and China-based property, plant and equipment represented approximately 21% of the company’s total at September 30, 2025.[29][30]
Cabot identifies Boston, Massachusetts, as its headquarters and lists locations across North America, EMEA, and Asia Pacific. The company reports approximately 4,100 employees worldwide, but the available sources do not specify their geographic distribution.[1][31][32][33][34] [1][28][29][29][29][30][31][32][33][34][31][32][33][34]
Business segments
Cabot reports two business segments in its FY2025 Form 10-K: **Reinforcement Materials** and **Performance Chemicals** [2]. Reinforcement Materials focuses on reinforcing carbons used in tires and industrial rubber products [3]. FY2025 external-customer revenue was $2,341 million, approximately **65%** of the $3,591 million segment total [27].
**Performance Chemicals** encompasses specialty carbons, specialty compounds, battery materials, fumed metal oxides, aerogel and inkjet products [5]. It generated $1,250 million in FY2025 external-customer revenue, approximately **35%** of the segment total [27]. [2][3][27][5][27][27]
Company history
Cabot Corporation traces its origins to 1882, when brothers Godfrey and Samuel Cabot opened a carbon-black plant near Worthington, Pennsylvania. The business was incorporated as Godfrey L. Cabot, Inc. in 1922, and expanded beyond the United States with a Louisiana facility in 1943 and its first UK facility in 1948.[35]
Cabot opened its first fumed-silica facility in 1958 and merged into Cabot Corporation in 1960. Its international growth continued with carbon-black facilities in Argentina in 1962, Brazil in 1977, and Indonesia and the Netherlands in 1981; the company also sold 12% of its shares on the New York Stock Exchange in 1968.[35] In 2020, Cabot acquired Shenzhen Sanshun Nano New Materials, adding carbon nanotubes to its portfolio, and launched its ENERMAX™ carbon-nanotube solutions in 2021.[36] [1][35][36]
