Overview
Chord Energy Corp. is an independent oil and gas exploration and production company focused on acquiring, developing, and producing crude oil, natural gas liquids, and natural gas. Its operations are concentrated in the Williston Basin of North Dakota and Montana, with limited non-operated interests in the Marcellus Shale.[1][2]
The company states that its mission is to produce hydrocarbons responsibly, with an emphasis on capital discipline, efficient operations, continuous improvement, employee development, and stewardship of communities and the environment.[1] For 2025, Chord reported revenue of approximately $4.9 billion and 665 employees.[3] [1][2][3][3]
Products & services
Chord Energy’s principal products are crude oil, natural gas liquids (NGLs), and natural gas produced from the Williston Basin. The company describes its crude oil as light sweet crude; the available disclosures do not specify further assay characteristics such as API gravity or sulfur content.[2][4]
For the six months ended June 30, 2026, production was 29.277 million barrels of crude oil, 9.236 million barrels of NGLs, and 74.152 Bcf of natural gas. On a barrel-of-oil-equivalent basis, the approximate production mix was 57.5% crude oil, 18.2% NGLs, and 24.3% natural gas.[5] Chord also markets its commodities and undertakes related transportation and logistics activities, including purchases and resales to optimize transportation, blend crude oil to pipeline specifications, or cover production shortfalls. These activities support product sales rather than representing a separately disclosed midstream service business.[6][7] [2][4][5][6][7]
Geographic presence
Chord Energy’s operations are concentrated in the Williston Basin, particularly northwestern North Dakota and northeastern Montana, where it held approximately 1.30 million net leasehold acres at year-end 2025.[2][8][9] Its Q2 2026 filing also reported limited non-operated Marcellus Shale interests and 22,382 MMcf of Marcellus gas production in the first half of 2026.[10][11] Chord announced in September 2026 that it had agreed to sell its non-operated Marcellus assets; the announced transaction was expected to close in Q4 2026.[12]
The company’s principal office is in Houston, Texas, and its listed North Dakota field offices are in Williston, Ray, New Town, Watford City, Keene, Mandaree, and Dickinson.[13][14] Chord reported 676 full-time employees as of February 13, 2026, and identified Houston and Williston as primary hiring locations; it did not provide employee counts by location.[15] Its Q2 2026 filing does not break out revenue by state, basin, or sales destination.[5] [2][8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15][5][12]
Business segments
Chord Energy reports one operating and reportable segment; it does not disclose separate segments for individual basins, formations, or business activities. The single segment therefore represents 100% of the company’s consolidated operations, but the company does not provide further segment-by-segment contribution percentages.[16][17]
The segment’s operating focus is oil and gas exploration and production in the Williston Basin, particularly the Middle Bakken and Three Forks formations in North Dakota and Montana. The latest available interim filing, for the second quarter of 2026, attributes all consolidated activity to the single segment; it reports first-half revenue of $3.838 billion and production of 50.872 million Boe, without a separate geographic or formation-level breakdown.[2][5] [16][17][2][5]
Company history
Chord Energy’s corporate roots trace to Oasis Petroleum LLC, formed in 2007. Oasis Petroleum Inc. was incorporated in Delaware in 2010 and completed an IPO that year, with its business focused on the Williston Basin.[18][19] Oasis and certain affiliates filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in September 2020 and emerged from restructuring in November. In 2021, Oasis agreed to sell its remaining Permian Basin upstream assets, refocusing its portfolio.[20][21]
In March 2022, Oasis and Whiting Petroleum announced a merger; the transaction closed on July 1, with Oasis as the surviving parent, renamed Chord Energy Corporation.[22][23][24] In February 2024, Chord agreed to acquire Enerplus in a stock-and-cash transaction, which closed on May 31, expanding the company’s Williston Basin-focused portfolio.[25][26][27] [20][21][22][25][18][19][23][24][26][27]
