CONSOLIDATED EDISON INC

Updated

Overview

Consolidated Edison, Inc. is a U.S. energy company whose core business is regulated utility service and electric-transmission investment. Through its subsidiaries, it delivers electricity, natural gas, and steam, and invests in electric transmission and related energy assets.[1][2]

Its customer-serving utilities are concentrated in the New York metropolitan area, including New York City and Westchester County, with service extending into southeastern New York and northern New Jersey. The company serves about 3.7 million electric customers through CECONY, alongside gas and steam customers, while O&R serves additional electric and gas customers in the region.[3]

Con Edison states its mission is to provide energy safely, reliably, and sustainably, help employees reach their potential, provide investors a fair return, and improve quality of life in the communities it serves.[8] For the year ended December 31, 2025, it reported total operating revenues of $16.918 billion; the company describes its workforce as nearly 14,000 employees.[9][8] [1]

Products & services

Consolidated Edison’s principal customer offerings are regulated utility services. Its subsidiaries supply electricity to about 3.7 million customers in New York City and Westchester and about 0.3 million customers in southeastern New York and northern New Jersey; CECONY’s 2025 peak electric demand was 12,530 MW.[3] CECONY delivers natural gas to about 1.1 million customers in parts of New York City and Westchester, while O&R serves more than 0.1 million gas customers in southeastern New York. CECONY’s firm-customer peak-day gas demand reached about 1,310 MDt in winter 2025/26.[4]

CECONY also produces and delivers district steam to about 1,490 customers in parts of Manhattan, with annual deliveries of approximately 16,975 million pounds and peak winter 2025/26 demand of about 7.01 million pounds per hour.[5][12] Additional customer services include electric-vehicle charging resources and incentives, energy-efficiency rebates for residential, multifamily and business customers, and solar interconnection and bill-credit services.[13] The 2025 report gives revenue shares by operating entity rather than by utility product: CECONY accounted for 93% of consolidated operating revenue, O&R 7%, and Con Edison Transmission less than 1%; it does not provide an equivalent electric, gas and steam revenue split in that table.[17] [3]

Geographic presence

Con Edison’s utility operations are concentrated in New York. Con Edison of New York (CECONY) serves about 3.7 million electric customers across New York City, except part of Queens, and most of Westchester County—an area of approximately 660 square miles. Its gas territory includes Manhattan, the Bronx, parts of Queens, and most of Westchester; steam service covers parts of Manhattan and serves about 1,490 customers.[3]

Orange and Rockland Utilities (O&R), including Rockland Electric Company, provides electric service across approximately 1,300 square miles in southeastern New York and northern New Jersey, serving about 300,000 customers; O&R’s gas service covers parts of southeastern New York and more than 100,000 customers. Its listed New York counties are Orange, Rockland, and Sullivan, and its New Jersey counties are Bergen, Passaic, and Sussex.[6] The 2025 annual report states that New York accounted for 76.66% of O&R’s electric revenues; it does not provide a comparable consolidated geographic revenue breakdown.[19] [3]

Business segments

Con Edison’s 2026 first-half segment reporting identifies **Con Edison of New York (CECONY)** and **Orange and Rockland Utilities (O&R)** as its regulated utilities, with **Con Edison Transmission** reported separately; the table also includes “Other.” CECONY provides electric and gas service in New York City and Westchester County and steam service in parts of Manhattan. O&R provides electric service in southeastern New York and northern New Jersey, and gas service in southeastern New York.[20]

For the six months ended June 30, 2026, CECONY contributed about **92% of consolidated revenue** ($8.459 billion of $9.164 billion) and **95% of operating income** ($1.646 billion of $1.730 billion). O&R contributed about **8% of revenue** ($704 million) and **5% of operating income** ($92 million). Con Edison Transmission, which develops and invests in electric-transmission projects and holds electric and gas assets through joint ventures, contributed less than 0.1% of revenue ($2 million); it reported a $3 million operating loss.[20]

The filing also presents operating activity detail within the utilities: CECONY’s electric, gas, and steam operations, and O&R’s electric and gas operations. These are activity-level breakouts alongside the entity-level segment reporting.[20] [20]

Company history

Consolidated Edison traces its history to the chartering of New York Gas Light Company on March 26, 1823. Electric service began in Lower Manhattan in 1882, when Thomas Edison’s Pearl Street generating station started supplying customers. In 1884, six New York gas-light companies consolidated as Consolidated Gas Company of New York; in 1901, major gas and electric businesses combined to form New York Edison Company.[21][22]

In 1936, the company adopted the name Consolidated Edison Company of New York, Inc., and acquired New York City’s district steam system. On January 1, 1998, following utility deregulation, Consolidated Edison, Inc. became the holding company for the operating utility and other businesses. The company agreed to acquire Orange & Rockland Utilities in 1998, completing the merger in July 1999. In 2023, it marked 200 years since its founding lineage began with the New York Gas Light Company charter.[21][23] [21]
