Overview
Copart, Inc. is a vehicle remarketing and online auction company specializing in salvage vehicles, including vehicles deemed total losses by insurers. Its virtual auction platform connects sellers—primarily insurance companies—with buyers such as dismantlers, rebuilders, dealers, exporters and the public. Supporting services include vehicle pickup and transport, storage, title processing and post-auction delivery.[1][2]
The company operates in 11 countries, including the United States, Canada, Brazil, the United Kingdom, Germany and Spain. Copart reported FY2026 revenue of $4.7 billion and approximately 7,400 U.S.-based and 4,600 international employees as of July 31, 2026.[1][3][4][5]
Copart describes its mission as “to create value and opportunity through vehicle auctions and exchange.” Founded in 1982, the company has developed from a single salvage yard in California into an international vehicle-auction business.[6][7] [1][2][3][4][5][6][7]
Products & services
Copart’s primary offering is an online vehicle auction and remarketing service. Its VB3 (Virtual Bidding Third Generation) platform lets registered buyers bid via web or mobile: buyers can place preliminary bids during a preview period, use BID4U to bid incrementally up to a set maximum, and then compete in a real-time virtual auction. The platform uses a countdown that closes the auction when no further bids are placed.[8] Copart 360 provides interactive 360-degree interior and exterior views, with zoom, for select vehicles.[9]
Seller services can include arranging vehicle transport to a facility, title processing, storage, listing and sale, and vehicle loading; Copart may also advance towing, repair or impound-release charges. Buyer-facing steps include searching and bidding, payment, and vehicle delivery or pickup.[10][11][12] For consigned vehicles, Copart charges service fees rather than taking ownership; auction-service revenue is reported net of the vehicle sale price. Separate vehicle-sales revenue represents the gross selling price of vehicles Copart owns or purchases as principal.[13][2]
In FY2026, service revenue represented 85% of total revenue and vehicle-sales revenue 15%. The filing does not provide revenue percentages for individual auction services such as transport, title processing or storage.[14] Insurance sellers accounted for 79% of vehicles processed in FY2026; this is a share of vehicle volume, not revenue.[15] [8][10][11][13][2][14][15][9][12]
Geographic presence
Copart’s geographic footprint spans the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Brazil, Canada, the United Arab Emirates, Spain, Finland, Oman, the Republic of Ireland, and Bahrain. The company is headquartered in Dallas, Texas, and reported 286 operating facilities globally in fiscal 2026. Disclosed facility counts include 22 in the U.K., 25 in Brazil, 9 in Germany, 4 in Finland, 8 owned facilities in Spain plus 3 leased storage locations, and 1 each in Ireland, the U.A.E., Oman, and Bahrain; Copart also reports facilities in every U.S. state.[16][17][18][19][20][21]
For the fiscal year ended July 31, 2026, the United States accounted for 81.6% of revenue and international markets 18.4%. U.S. revenue was approximately $3.81 billion, compared with approximately $859 million internationally.[22] [16][17][18][19][20][21][22]
Business segments
Copart reports two geographic operating segments, the U.S. and International, rather than separate service-line segments. Both conduct vehicle remarketing and auction-related activities; the distinction is whether operations are in the United States or outside it. Copart’s broader vehicle-auction business serves vehicle sellers and buyers through its internet auction platform.[23][1]
For the fiscal year ended July 31, 2026, the U.S. segment generated $3.807 billion, approximately 81.6% of consolidated revenue. International generated $858.8 million, approximately 18.4%.[24][19] [23][1][24][19]
Company history
Founded by Willis J. Johnson in 1982 as a single salvage yard in Vallejo, California, Copart expanded across the United States during its first decade. It went public on Nasdaq in 1994, acquired NER Auctions Group in 1995—substantially increasing its scale—and launched Copart.com in 1996.[25][26]
Copart introduced online proxy bidding in 1998 and shifted to fully online auctions in 2003, the year it also reached 100 locations and opened its first Canadian yard. It entered the United Kingdom by acquiring Universal Salvage in 2007, then broadened its international presence, including expansion into Brazil, the UAE, and Germany from 2012.[26][25][27] [25][26][27]
