Core Natural Resources, Inc.

Updated

Overview

Core Natural Resources, Inc. is a U.S.-based coal producer and exporter operating in the energy and metallurgical coal sectors. It produces metallurgical coal used in steelmaking and thermal coal used for power generation and industrial purposes, with mining operations in West Virginia, Pennsylvania, the Powder River Basin, and Colorado, and sales to domestic and international markets.[1][2]

The company says its purpose is “discovering, producing, and providing precious natural resources in the service of human progress.” [3] Core was formed on January 14, 2025, when CONSOL Energy completed an all-stock merger with Arch Resources and adopted the Core Natural Resources name.[4] It reported $4.165 billion in revenue for 2025 and $2.225 billion for the six months ended June 30, 2026.[5][6] The company reports approximately 5,000 or more employees.[7] [1]

Products & services

Core Natural Resources sells metallurgical coal and thermal coal. Its metallurgical products include Low-Vol, High-Vol A, High-Vol B and crossover coals for steelmaking; the company associates High-Vol A with Leer and Leer South, High-Vol B with Mountain Laurel, and Low-Vol with Beckley and Itmann.[2] Its thermal coal includes high-calorific-value coal from PAMC and West Elk, as well as Powder River Basin (PRB) coal. PAMC coal is described as high-energy and relatively low in sulfur and impurities, with thermoplastic properties that also support metallurgical, industrial and power-generation uses.[1][10]

Core also provides coal marketing and delivery through rail, barge and ocean-vessel routes, and operates the Core Marine Terminal while holding a 35% interest in Dominion Terminal.[1][11] In the six months ended June 30, 2026, sales totaled 43.319 million tons: PRB 22.131 million (51.1%), High CV Thermal 16.131 million (37.2%) and metallurgical 5.057 million (11.7%).[12] Segment coal revenue totaled approximately $1.833 billion; High CV Thermal contributed $943.202 million (51.5%), metallurgical $572.023 million (31.2%) and PRB $317.354 million (17.3%).[6] [2]

Core Natural Resources reports operations across six states. Its mining assets include the Pennsylvania Mining Complex in southwestern Pennsylvania and northern West Virginia; West Elk in Colorado; Leer, Leer South, Beckley, Mountain Laurel and Itmann in West Virginia; and Black Thunder and Coal Creek in Wyoming. Its coal-export-terminal operations include Core Marine Terminal at the Port of Baltimore, Maryland, and a 35% interest in Dominion Terminal in Newport News, Virginia.[13]

The company’s principal executive offices are in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, and its official contact page also lists an office in St. Louis, Missouri. Core describes its workforce as 5,000+ employees across its U.S. operations; a state-by-state employee breakdown was not located.[18]

For FY2025, exports accounted for approximately 56% of coal revenue, while U.S. electric-power producers and other domestic customers accounted for 44%. India represented more than 10% of total revenue; the company did not disclose a complete country-by-country revenue breakdown. By volume, about 28% of FY2025 coal sales were exports and 72% domestic.[20][21] [13]

Business segments

Core Natural Resources reports four business segments, managed according to market and coal quality. For the six months ended June 30, 2026, High CV Thermal contributed approximately 51.8% of the four segments’ combined revenue before eliminations. It comprises the Pennsylvania Mining Complex and West Elk mine and produces thermal coal.[22][6] [22]

Company history

Core Natural Resources traces part of its coal-mining heritage to 1864. One of its predecessors, Arch Mineral Corporation, was organized in 1969 and merged with Ashland Coal in 1997; Arch later became Arch Coal and adopted the name Arch Resources in 2020.[3]

A separate predecessor, CONSOL Energy, became an independent public company in 2017 when CNX spun off its coal business. In August 2024, CONSOL and Arch announced an all-stock merger of equals. The merger closed on January 14, 2025: CONSOL was renamed Core Natural Resources, Inc., while Arch became its wholly owned subsidiary, and the company began trading as CNR the following day. At formation, Jimmy Brock became executive chair and Paul A. Lang CEO; Brock succeeded Lang as CEO in October 2025.[26] [4]
