Overview
CVR Energy Inc. is a U.S. energy and fertilizer company operating in petroleum refining and marketing, renewable fuels, and nitrogen fertilizer. Its products include gasoline, diesel and other refined fuels, renewable diesel, ammonia, and urea ammonium nitrate (UAN). The company’s operations are concentrated in the Mid-Continent, including refineries in Kansas and Oklahoma and fertilizer production in Illinois.[1][2][3][4]
CVR describes its mission as becoming a top-tier North American petroleum-refining and nitrogen-based-fertilizer company, emphasizing safe and reliable operations, financial performance, and profitable growth. Its official investor overview lists approximately 1,595 employees.[5][6] [1][2][3][4][5][6]
Products & services
CVR Energy’s petroleum products include gasoline, diesel, jet fuel and other distillates. Its refining operations can process a range of crude grades, from heavy-sour to light-sweet, and produce fuels using units for fluid catalytic cracking, hydrotreating, hydrocracking, reforming and alkylation. The two refineries have combined crude-oil throughput capacity of 206,500 barrels per day. Crude gathering and transportation by truck and pipeline support refinery supply; the company does not identify these logistics activities as a separate customer-facing product.[7][8][9][3][10][11]
Its nitrogen fertilizer products are ammonia, urea ammonium nitrate (UAN) and urea products. UAN can be applied through the growing season and used alongside pesticides and herbicides; the company describes it as offering farmers application flexibility and typically receiving a premium to ammonia and urea on a nitrogen-equivalent basis. Coffeyville’s facility produces hydrogen from petroleum coke for fertilizer production and has capacity for 1,300 tons of ammonia and 3,100 tons of UAN per day. East Dubuque has capacity for 1,075 tons of ammonia and 950 tons of UAN per day, and can vary the amounts of ammonia upgraded into UAN and nitric acid.[12][13][14][4]
For the six months ended June 30, 2026, petroleum product revenue was $4.336 billion, including $2.040 billion from gasoline and $2.163 billion from distillates; those figures equate to approximately 47.0% and 49.9% of petroleum revenue, respectively. Nitrogen fertilizer revenue was $382 million, including $237 million from UAN, $93 million from ammonia and $23 million from urea products—approximately 62.0%, 24.3% and 6.0% of fertilizer revenue, respectively. Petroleum and nitrogen fertilizer represented approximately 91.9% and 8.1% of consolidated third-party sales; product-mix percentages are calculated from the reported revenue amounts.[15][16] [7][8][9][3][10][11][12][13][14][4][15][16]
Geographic presence
CVR Energy’s operating footprint is concentrated in the U.S. Mid-Continent. Its two refineries are in Coffeyville, Kansas, and Wynnewood, Oklahoma, with combined nameplate capacity of 206,500 barrels per day. Coffeyville products are marketed mainly in the central Mid-Continent; Wynnewood products are distributed to Oklahoma, parts of Arkansas and eastern Missouri, with pipeline connections reaching Texas and neighboring connected states.[3][17][18]
Its nitrogen fertilizer facilities are in Coffeyville, Kansas, and East Dubuque, Illinois. Published sales territories include Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Colorado, Nebraska, Missouri, Iowa and Wyoming from Coffeyville, and Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota and Wisconsin from East Dubuque.[19][20]
The company lists its headquarters in Sugar Land, Texas. Its 2024 ESG report stated that all 1,596 employees were in the United States, but did not provide a state-by-state distribution. The filings reviewed report revenue by business segment and product rather than by country or region.[21][22][23] [3][17][18][19][20][21][23][22]
Business segments
CVR Energy currently reports two operating segments: Petroleum and Nitrogen Fertilizer. Petroleum refines and markets transportation fuels, including gasoline, diesel, jet fuel and other distillates, and conducts crude-oil gathering and logistics activities supporting its refineries. Nitrogen Fertilizer, through CVR Partners, produces and markets ammonia and urea ammonium nitrate (UAN), primarily for agricultural use.[12]
For the six months ended June 30, 2026, Petroleum generated $4.336 billion of third-party sales, approximately 91.9% of consolidated sales; Nitrogen Fertilizer generated $382 million, approximately 8.1%.[24]
The segment presentation changed from FY2025, when the company reported Petroleum, Renewables and Nitrogen Fertilizer. In December 2025, CVR returned its Wynnewood renewable diesel unit to hydrocarbon processing and stopped producing and marketing renewable diesel; in 2026, Renewables no longer qualified for separate reportable-segment disclosure, and prior-period segment information was adjusted accordingly.[25] In FY2025, third-party sales were approximately 89.6% Petroleum, 2.0% Renewables and 8.4% Nitrogen Fertilizer.[26] [12][24][24][24][25][26][26][26]
Company history
The Coffeyville refinery, which later became a core part of CVR Energy’s business, began operating in 1906. In 2005, Coffeyville Resources and its subsidiaries were acquired by an investment partnership of Goldman Sachs’ GS Capital Partners and Kelso & Company. CVR Energy was formed in 2006 to pursue a public offering and began trading on the New York Stock Exchange in October 2007.[27][28][29]
In 2006, Coffeyville Resources approved a refinery and nitrogen-fertilizer expansion. CVR expanded its refining operations in 2011 by acquiring Gary-Williams Energy, including the Wynnewood refinery in Oklahoma. Its fertilizer subsidiary CVR Partners merged with Rentech Nitrogen in 2016, adding a fertilizer facility in Illinois. Later milestones included starting renewable-diesel operations at Wynnewood in 2022 and selling a 50% interest in Midway Pipeline in 2024.[30][31][32][33][34] [32][27][28][29][30][31][33][34]
