Overview

Delta Air Lines, Inc. is a U.S.-based global airline whose core business is passenger air transportation. It also operates air cargo and refinery businesses, and offers travel across Main Cabin and premium cabins, alongside loyalty and travel-related services. Delta describes its mission as connecting the world to create opportunities, foster understanding and expand horizons.[1]+4

Products & services

Delta’s passenger products span several cabin tiers. Delta One offers lie-flat seating, premium dining and bedding, and priority services; Delta Premium Select offers roomier seating, greater recline and adjustable leg and footrests; Delta First and Delta Comfort+ add features such as priority services or extra legroom and earlier boarding, while Delta Main is the standard cabin product. For the six months ended June 30, 2026, Delta reported $12.256 billion in main-cabin ticket revenue and $12.282 billion in premium-product revenue, increases of 5% and 16%, respectively, year over year. Loyalty travel awards generated $2.277 billion, travel-related services $1.094 billion, and cargo $521 million; these categories grew 12%, 9%, and 24%, respectively. SkyMiles members earn miles through Delta and participating partners and can redeem them for travel and other awards. Delta Air Lines’ operating network spans the United States and international markets. For 2025, operating revenue was $63.364 billion: Domestic $44.655 billion (70.5%), Atlantic $10.766 billion (17.0%), Latin America $4.579 billion (7.2%) and Pacific $3.364 billion (5.3%). In the six months ended June 30, 2026, revenue was $35.611 billion: Domestic $25.459 billion (71.5%), Atlantic $5.487 billion (15.4%), Latin America $2.706 billion (7.6%) and Pacific $1.959 billion (5.5%). Delta’s principal executive offices are in Atlanta, Georgia. Its subsidiary operates a refinery and related logistics assets near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, with fuel supplied across the northeastern United States, including the LaGuardia and JFK hubs. Delta Air Lines reports two operating segments: **Airline**, its managed airline business providing scheduled passenger and cargo air transportation, and including its loyalty program and other ancillary businesses; and **Refinery**, comprising Monroe’s Trainer refinery and related assets, which produces or procures jet fuel for Delta and exchanges or sells non-jet products to obtain jet fuel.[31]+3

Company history

Delta traces its origins to Huff Daland Dusters, founded in 1925 as a crop-dusting business. C.E. Woolman led its purchase in 1928, after which it was renamed Delta Air Service; the company began passenger service in 1929.[12]

Delta moved its headquarters from Monroe, Louisiana, to Atlanta in 1941. A series of acquisitions expanded its network: Chicago and Southern in 1953, Northeast Airlines in 1972, Western Airlines in 1987, and Pan Am’s transatlantic routes and assets in 1991.[12]

Delta filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2005 and emerged from reorganization in 2007. In 2008, it merged with Northwest Airlines, combining their networks.[12] [12]
