Company history
Dillard’s was founded in 1938, when William T. Dillard opened his first store in Nashville, Arkansas. The business expanded into nearby markets, including Texarkana in 1948, and grew through acquisitions such as Mayer & Schmidt in Tyler, Texas, in 1956. In 1964, the company moved its headquarters to Little Rock and incorporated as Dillard’s, Inc.; it first offered Class A shares to the public in 1969.[4][20][21]
The company’s growth accelerated through department-store acquisitions in the 1980s, including Dayton Hudson divisions in 1984 and stores associated with Macy’s, Joske’s and Cain-Sloan in 1986–87. William T. Dillard II became president and chief operating officer in 1977, then CEO in 1998; his brother Alex became president that year. Dillard’s continued expanding through acquisitions of regional department-store groups and locations, including Gayfers, Bacon’s and Maison Blanche in 1998.[20][22][23] [4][20][21][22][23]
