Company history
DTE Energy’s roots trace to Detroit’s gas utility, established in 1849. Electric service followed in the 1880s: Edison Illuminating Co. of Detroit was organized and began serving customers in 1886, and Detroit Edison was incorporated in 1903. The company expanded its generating capacity in the early 20th century, while Michigan gas companies consolidated as Michigan Consolidated Gas Co. in 1938. Later generation milestones included Monroe Power Plant’s four units, which came online between 1971 and 1974, and Fermi 2, which began commercial operation in 1988.[24][25][20]
DTE Energy Company was organized in 1995; in 1996, Detroit Edison established DTE Energy as a holding company, reflecting a broader energy business. The company expanded its Michigan gas operations through its 2001 merger with MCN Energy Group. It began acquiring wind-development rights in Michigan’s Thumb region in 2007, and in 2013 Detroit Edison changed its name to DTE Electric Company.[26][24][25][27]
During the 2010s, DTE expanded its non-utility businesses, including through natural-gas midstream asset acquisitions in 2016 and 2019. It later spun off DT Midstream as an independent public company in 2021.
