Company history

Embraer was established by the Brazilian government in 1969 to develop and manufacture aircraft, with Ozires Silva leading the Bandeirante project and becoming its first managing director. The company began operating in January 1970. The EMB-110 Bandeirante was certified in 1973, followed by the EMB-120 Brasília in 1985; Embraer also developed military aircraft, including the Tucano and the AMX in partnership with Aermacchi.[31]

After becoming publicly held in 1989, Embraer was privatized in 1994, while Brazil retained a golden share with veto rights over certain matters. The company entered the regional jet market with the ERJ-145, certified in 1996, and listed American depositary receipts on the New York Stock Exchange in 2000. Its E-Jets received certifications from 2004 to 2006, as Embraer also expanded into business aviation with the Phenom and Lineage families.[7]

From 2005, Embraer expanded its defense and security activities through acquisitions and partnerships, including investments involving OGMA, Atech, Bradar and Savis. It launched the E-Jets E2 family in 2013, and the KC-390 made its first flight in 2015 before entering service in 2019. The company introduced the Praetor 500 and 600 in 2018; in 2022, its Eve electric-aircraft business became a separately listed public company following a business combination.[39] [31]
