Company history
Eversource’s utility roots extend to the mid-19th century, while its modern holding-company lineage took shape in 1966 with the formation of Northeast Utilities from predecessor New England electric companies.[1][27] Northeast Utilities expanded into New Hampshire by acquiring Public Service Company of New Hampshire in 1992.[28] In 1999, NSTAR was formed as the holding company for BEC Energy and Commonwealth Energy System, adding another major New England utility lineage to the later combination.[29]
Northeast Utilities and NSTAR announced a merger in 2010 and completed it in April 2012, with Northeast Utilities as the parent company.[30][31] Northeast Utilities adopted the Eversource Energy name in 2015.[32] Eversource broadened its natural-gas distribution operations in 2020 by acquiring Bay State Gas and Columbia Gas of Massachusetts assets.[33] In 2024, it sold its interests in Sunrise Wind, South Fork Wind and Revolution Wind; it later completed the sale of Aquarion Water Company in June 2026.[34][35] [33][34][1][27][28][29][30][31][32][35]
