Its regulated utilities serve more than 6 million customers across the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic, and the company operates more than 24,000 miles of transmission lines.[1] Its distribution service area spans approximately 65,000 square miles across Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Maryland, New Jersey and New York.[2]

The company states its mission is to make customers’ lives brighter, the environment better and communities stronger.[3] For 2025, FirstEnergy reported revenue of $15.1 billion; its 2025 Corporate Responsibility Report describes a workforce of more than 11,500 employees.[4][5] [1]

Products & services

FirstEnergy’s principal offering is regulated electricity delivery, including distribution and transmission service; its Integrated segment also supplies regulated generation. Distribution utilities serve about 4.3 million customers in Ohio and Pennsylvania, while the Integrated segment serves about 2 million customers in New Jersey, West Virginia and Maryland.[6][7] The company’s regulated generation fleet has 3,610 MW of capacity, primarily in West Virginia and Virginia, including three solar sites totaling 30 MW.[7]

Transmission services include operating and maintaining transmission infrastructure across the company’s service areas; Stand-Alone Transmission revenues are primarily based on forward-looking formula rates, with annual updates and adjustments to reflect actual rate base and costs.[8] For customers, FirstEnergy provides online account, payment and electricity-usage management, along with payment reminders, outage reporting and status checks, restoration updates, planned-outage notices, and severe-weather alerts.[9][10] Its outage map provides state-specific outage information and is refreshed approximately every 15 minutes.[11] [6]

Geographic presence

FirstEnergy’s electric distribution companies serve more than 6 million customers across approximately 65,000 square miles in Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Maryland, New Jersey and New York. The service territory spans parts of the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic and includes an estimated 14 million residents.[2][1]

The operating territories include central and northeastern Ohio for Ohio Edison, northeastern Ohio for Cleveland Electric Illuminating, and northwestern Ohio for Toledo Edison. Pennsylvania operations primarily serve Pennsylvania, with a small area around Waverly extending into New York; JCP&L serves New Jersey; Potomac Edison serves parts of Maryland and West Virginia; and Mon Power serves West Virginia.[12]

FirstEnergy’s transmission operations also extend into Virginia, in addition to Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Maryland; the company reports more than 24,000 miles of transmission lines.[19][1] Its corporate headquarters is in Akron, Ohio.[20] [2]

Business segments

FirstEnergy reports three segments. Distribution comprises its Ohio and Pennsylvania utilities, which distribute electricity to approximately 4.3 million customers and procure power for default or standard-service customers. Its year-end 2025 rate base was $11.1 billion.[21]

Integrated comprises JCP&L, Monongahela Power (MP), and Potomac Edison (PE). It combines regulated distribution and transmission operations in New Jersey, West Virginia, and Maryland with MP’s regulated generation; it served about 2 million customers and had 3,610 MW of regulated generation capacity at year-end 2025. Its rate base was $10.2 billion.[24][7]

Stand-Alone Transmission consists of FirstEnergy’s interests in FirstEnergy Transmission (FET) and Keystone Appalachian Transmission Company (KATCo), which own and operate transmission infrastructure. Its transmission revenue is primarily determined through forward-looking formula rates. FirstEnergy-owned rate base was $5.4 billion.[25][26]

For the six months ended June 30, 2026, the segments’ shares of external revenue across reportable segments were approximately 46.8% Distribution ($3.685 billion), 39.8% Integrated ($3.135 billion), and 13.3% Stand-Alone Transmission ($1.046 billion); the percentages sum to slightly more than 100% due to rounding. Their respective shares of segment earnings attributable to FirstEnergy were 45.6%, 32.4%, and 22.0%.[27] JCP&L separately moved from distinct Distribution and Transmission segments to one integrated business for its own reporting effective January 1, 2026; FirstEnergy continued to report the three consolidated segments above.[28][27] [21]

Company history

FirstEnergy was formed in November 1997 through the merger of Ohio Edison and Centerior Energy. It expanded in 2001 by merging with General Public Utilities, adding utilities including Jersey Central Power & Light, Met-Ed and Penelec; in 2011, its merger with Allegheny Energy further expanded its operations.[29][30]

In March 2018, FirstEnergy Solutions, its generation subsidiary, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, a proceeding that did not include FirstEnergy’s regulated utilities. FirstEnergy Solutions emerged in February 2020 as the independent company Energy Harbor, as FirstEnergy shifted its focus toward regulated utility operations.[31][32]

On June 1, 2023, Brian X. Tierney became FirstEnergy’s president and chief executive officer, succeeding interim CEO John W. Somerhalder II.[33] [29]
