HONG KONG & CHINA GAS

Updated

Overview

The Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited, branded Towngas, is an energy and utilities company founded in 1862. Its historic core is the production and supply of town gas, alongside mainland China city-gas businesses; it also operates in water and environmental services and develops renewable energy and green-fuel businesses.[1][2] Towngas’s vision is to be a leading clean and smart energy supplier and contribute to a sustainable world driven by green energy.[3]

Hong Kong and mainland China define its principal markets. The company reports utility and environmental projects across 29 mainland provincial regions, and its mainland city-gas network served 44.96 million customers at 30 June 2026.[1][4] For FY2025, revenue was HK$54.326 billion; the company reported 2,146 employees engaged in its Hong Kong town-gas business, a business-specific rather than Group-wide count.[5][6] [2]

Products & services

Hong Kong & China Gas (Towngas) supplies town gas to residential, commercial and industrial customers. In Hong Kong, 2025 gas sales totalled 27,181 TJ: residential customers accounted for 54% of sales volume, commercial customers 40%, and industrial customers 6%. The group also reports mainland China “Gas+” sales of about 0.3 billion m³ annually and uses AI-enabled engineering, operations and customer-service capabilities.[7][8]

Its energy-transition products and services include green hydrogen production and supply, sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO), green methanol, renewable power and energy storage. A landfill-based green hydrogen project reached production of 1 tonne per day; other hydrogen applications include power generation and charging infrastructure. EcoCeres produces renewable fuels from waste feedstocks, with combined annual renewable-fuel capacity reported at 770,000 tonnes after commissioning of its Malaysia plant. VENEX, a joint venture, reported annual green-methanol sales of about 17,000 tonnes. Renewable-energy operations reported 2.8 GW of grid-connected photovoltaic capacity, 2.48 billion kWh of power generation and 487 MWh of grid-connected energy-storage capacity.[9]

Consumer and service offerings include kitchen appliances, home insurance, home-safety services and a one-stop “Appliance + Platform + Service” solution; the presentation reported coverage of 270,000 mainland customers. The group also provides electricity trading and operations-and-maintenance services, and reports water and solid-waste operations, used cooking oil recycling of about 8,000 tonnes and biomass-gas production of about 10 million m³. The 2025 materials provide Hong Kong gas sales by customer type as volume shares, but do not state product- or segment-level revenue as a percentage of group revenue.[14] [7]

Geographic presence

Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland are the company’s principal operating geographies. In FY2025, its mainland city-gas business comprised 325 projects across 23 provincial-level regions. Mainland gas sales were 36.35 billion cubic metres; in Hong Kong, gas sales were 27,181 million MJ and customer accounts totalled 2,056,216 at year-end.[15][6]

FY2025 revenue from external customers was HK$12,373.8 million in Hong Kong and HK$41,952.5 million from “the Chinese mainland and other geographical locations.” These amounts represent approximately 22.8% and 77.2% of the reported total, respectively; the combined mainland-and-other category does not disclose mainland revenue separately.[15]

The mainland gas-supply network includes LNG terminals at Caofeidian and Dapeng Bay and underground gas storage at Jintan. The company also identifies upstream resource projects at Jincheng and Weiyuan.[16] The company’s official corporate contact address is in North Point, Hong Kong; the 2025 booklet reports 2,146 employees in the town-gas business, but does not provide a geographic employee split.[17][6] [15]

Business segments

Towngas’s 2025 segment presentation groups operations into six management categories. By reported profit from operations, Hong Kong utility contributed HK$3,640 million (about 48.5% of the HK$7,501 million total), while Mainland utility contributed HK$3,041 million (40.5%). Hong Kong utility covers the gas business; Mainland utility comprises city gas and water and environmental services.[18]

Growth businesses comprised Extended Business, Renewable Energy and Green Fuels. Extended Business contributed HK$468 million (6.2%) and includes consumer and lifestyle services such as appliances, insurance and home-safety products. Renewable Energy contributed HK$278 million (3.7%), with a focus on solar generation and related energy and carbon services. Green Fuels recorded a loss of HK$158 million (−2.1%) and focuses on advanced biofuels and green methanol.[18]

The Others category, covering rental and telecommunications, contributed HK$232 million (3.1%). Percentages are approximate shares of 2025 profit from operations, not revenue.[18] [18]

Company history

Hong Kong & China Gas was registered in England in 1862 and began supplying gas in 1864, initially lighting 500 street lamps in Victoria. It expanded service to Kowloon with the opening of Jordan Road Works in 1892.[23][24]

The company’s production infrastructure developed through the opening of Ma Tau Kok Plant in 1956, the shift from coal to naphtha as feedstock in 1973, and the start of production at Tai Po Plant in 1986. Its registration was transferred to Hong Kong in 1982.[24][25]

Towngas entered mainland China’s city-gas market in 1994 through a joint venture in Panyu, Guangzhou, and expanded into water services in 2005 through Hua Yan Water. In 2007, its acquisition of Panva Gas added 25 piped-gas projects, significantly broadening its mainland operations.[24][23]
