Business segments
ITOCHU reports eight operating segments: Textile, focused on apparel, brands, sports and footwear; Machinery, covering areas including power, shipping, aerospace, automobiles and construction machinery; Metals & Minerals, centered on mineral resources and decarbonization-related businesses; and Energy & Chemicals, spanning chemicals and energy businesses. Food covers food products and distribution; General Products & Realty includes construction materials and real estate; ICT & Financial Business includes digital, finance, insurance and related growth areas; and The 8th focuses on consumer-facing businesses such as advertising, media, retail finance and healthcare.[1]
For the fiscal year ended March 31, 2026, ITOCHU reported ¥781.5 billion in consolidated core profit. As approximate shares of that total, segment core profit was Textile 5.3% (¥41.3bn), Machinery 18.1% (¥141.1bn), Metals & Minerals 18.7% (¥146.0bn), Energy & Chemicals 8.9% (¥69.8bn), Food 10.8% (¥84.1bn), and General Products & Realty 5.7% (¥44.8bn). These six segments account for 67.5% of group core profit; the available figures did not allow the remainder to be divided reliably between ICT & Financial Business and The 8th.[21] [1][21]
Company history
ITOCHU traces its origins to 1858, when 15-year-old Chubei Itoh began trading linen. The opening of Itoh Itomise in 1893 marked another early milestone in the business’s development.[22]
Following wartime reorganizations—in which the company name changed to Sanko in 1941 and Daiken in 1944—C. Itoh & Co. was re-established in 1949, the year of ITOCHU Corporation’s incorporation. The company listed in Tokyo and Osaka in 1950, established ITOCHU America in 1952, and merged with Ataka & Co. in 1977, strengthening its iron-and-steel business.[22][4][23]
ITOCHU acquired about 30% of FamilyMart’s issued shares in 1998, marking its entry into retail. In 2012 it agreed to acquire Dole’s worldwide packaged-foods and Asian fresh-produce businesses; the transaction closed in 2013.[24][25][26] [22][4][23][24][25][26]
