JAPAN TOBACCO INC

Updated

Overview

Japan Tobacco Inc. (JT) is a Japan-based global tobacco company whose core business is developing, manufacturing and selling tobacco products, including cigarettes and heated tobacco products. Its portfolio includes international brands such as Winston and Camel, Japan brands such as Mevius, and the Ploom heated-tobacco brand. The Group also operates a processed-food business, offering frozen and packaged foods and seasonings; it completed the transfer of its pharmaceutical business in December 2025.[1]

JT’s stated Group Purpose is “Fulfilling Moments, Enriching Life.” [4][5] Its tobacco products are sold in more than 130 markets. For FY2025, the company reported revenue of ¥3.47 trillion; it had 52,867 consolidated employees as of December 31, 2025.[6][5] [4]

Products & services

Japan Tobacco’s principal consumer products include combustible cigarettes sold under its global flagship brands Winston, Camel, MEVIUS and LD. Its heated-tobacco platform, Ploom, uses separately sold devices and tobacco sticks. Ploom AURA features SMART HEATFLOW technology and a four-mode Heat Select System, while EVO sticks are among its consumables; Ploom offerings also include LYO varieties such as Arctic Mint and Wild Berry.[7]

In the first half of 2026, Ploom volume increased 43.5% year on year, while revenue from reduced-risk products increased 40.7%. In Q1 2026, heated-product shares of the relevant segment were reported at 15.8% in Japan, 7.2% in Czechia, 7.1% in Slovakia, 5.2% in Lithuania, 2.9% in Poland and 1.7% in Italy.[10][11]

JT’s processed-food products include frozen Sanuki Udon noodles, ambient foods and seasonings, including HIMAX yeast extract. The processed-food business reported FY2025 revenue of ¥163.0 billion and adjusted operating profit of ¥8.5 billion.[12] JT’s FY2025 pharmaceutical figures—revenue of ¥97.0 billion and adjusted operating profit of ¥4.0 billion—relate to a business transferred to Shionogi on December 1, 2025, and should not be regarded as a continuing JT product operation.[12][3] [7]

Geographic presence

Japan Tobacco Inc.’s tobacco business is organized across three geographic clusters: Asia, Western Europe, and EMA. For FY2025, tobacco-business core revenue was ¥864.2 billion in Asia (27.1%), ¥735.6 billion in Western Europe (23.1%), and ¥1,584.6 billion in EMA (49.8%), out of ¥3,184.4 billion total. These are regional tobacco core-revenue figures, not consolidated group revenue; JT reported consolidated revenue of ¥3,467.7 billion for FY2025.[15][6]

At December 31, 2025, JT reported that group companies operated in more than 100 countries, with tobacco products sold in more than 130 markets. The group had 39 tobacco manufacturing plants in 28 countries. JTI’s global overview also lists leaf sourcing in 38 countries and eight R&D centers.[5]

Japan Tobacco Inc.’s head office is in Tokyo; JTI, its international tobacco business, is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland. The group reported 52,867 consolidated employees at year-end 2025, while JTI describes a network of approximately 400 offices in 120 countries; no employee distribution by geography is stated in these sources.[18] [15]

Business segments

Japan Tobacco Inc. reports its continuing businesses in two segments. The Tobacco Business produces and sells tobacco products, including combustible and reduced-risk products; in FY2025, its external revenue was approximately ¥3,305.4 billion, or about 95.3% of consolidated revenue of ¥3,467.675 billion.[22][6]

The Processed Food Business focuses on frozen and ambient foods and seasonings. Its FY2025 revenue was approximately ¥159.5 billion, or about 4.6% of consolidated revenue. The percentages are approximate and use consolidated revenue as the denominator; the pharmaceutical business was transferred in 2025 and is not included in this continuing-business comparison.[23] [22]

Company history

Japan Tobacco’s origins date to the national tobacco monopoly established in 1898 and its successor, the Japan Tobacco and Salt Public Corporation, formed in 1949. Japan Tobacco Inc. was established as a corporation in 1985, and its shares were listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange in 1994.[25][26]

The company expanded beyond Japan in the late 1990s: it acquired a majority stake in Torii Pharmaceutical in 1998 and RJR Nabisco’s non-U.S. tobacco business in 1999, establishing the foundation for its international tobacco operations. It added further scale through the acquisition of Gallaher in 2007 and expanded its food business with majority stakes in Katokichi and Fuji Foods in 2008.[27]

JT entered tobacco-vapor products with Ploom in Japan in 2013; Ploom TECH followed in 2016, with its first launch outside Japan in Switzerland in 2017. During this period, the group also expanded through acquisitions including Logic, the non-U.S. Natural American Spirit business, Donskoy Tabak, and Akij’s tobacco business. JT withdrew from beverage manufacturing and sales in 2015.[25]

JT unified its Japanese-domestic and international tobacco businesses under a single operating model in January 2022. In 2025, it completed the transfer of its Torii shares and pharmaceutical business to Shionogi.[32] [25]
