For scale, FY2025 non-life net premiums written were ¥5,004.7 billion and ordinary income was ¥6,660,813 million; FY2026 figures in the cited results materials were forecasts. The company’s story page lists 38,247 “global and diverse human assets.” [5][6] [1]

Products & services

MS&AD’s non-life portfolio includes fire and allied, marine, personal accident, voluntary automobile, compulsory automobile liability (CALI), and other insurance. In FY2025, the year ended March 31, 2026, voluntary auto was the largest class for Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance and Aioi Nissay Dowa Insurance combined, with ¥1,615.0 billion, or about 50.1%, of their ¥3,225.6 billion in net premiums written. Fire and allied accounted for ¥567.0 billion (17.6%), and other insurance for ¥491.5 billion (15.2%).[7] CALI provides legally required motor cover for injury or death in traffic accidents.[8]

The Group’s telematics auto insurance uses connected-car driving data to relate premiums to driving behavior and safe-driving levels, and includes safety feedback and accident-prevention and response services.[9] Its life-insurance offerings include protection as well as asset-building and inheritance-related products.[1] Overseas and specialty offerings include casualty, marine, and aviation insurance; the Group has also described developing casualty products for small and medium-sized enterprises and integrated product-and-service offerings.[10][11]

Services alongside insurance include MSA Care Web, a workplace healthcare service, and risk-management solutions such as greenhouse-gas calculation and visualization, natural-disaster preparedness, and weather derivatives.[12][13] In FY2025, overseas insurance subsidiaries contributed ¥1,735.1 billion, or about 34.7%, of the Group’s ¥5,004.7 billion in consolidated net non-life premiums; domestic life premiums were reported separately at ¥1,741.0 billion.[14] [7]

Geographic presence

MS&AD’s core domestic operations are in Japan, alongside an international network spanning 48 countries and regions. Its overseas footprint includes North and South America, the U.K. and continental Europe, and Asia-Pacific. Subsidiary locations include the United States, Brazil, the U.K., Switzerland, Germany, Belgium, Singapore, Taiwan, Hong Kong, China, Vietnam, India, Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, Malaysia, Laos and Australia.[15]

In FY2025, international business generated about ¥2 trillion in net premiums written and ¥300 billion in adjusted profit. Consolidated non-life net premiums written were ¥5,004.7 billion; the available figures do not provide a country-by-country revenue or premium percentage breakdown.[16][17]

The 2026 Integrated Report lists 39,746 employees, while Group workforce information describes approximately 9,000 employees outside Japan. The Group’s international network includes office locations such as New York, London and Singapore; its domestic insurance-company headquarters are in Tokyo.[18] [15]

Business segments

MS&AD reports its businesses in two related ways: five business domains—domestic non-life insurance, domestic life insurance, international, financial services, and digital/risk-related services—and six reportable segments, which split the two domestic insurance domains by insurer. Financial services and digital/risk-related services are not separate segments in the six-segment financial table.[21][22]

For the year ended 31 March 2026 (FY2025), the six reportable segments’ approximate shares of consolidated external revenue were: MSI, domestic non-life insurance and related asset management, 29.3%; Aioi Nissay Dowa Insurance (ADI), domestic non-life insurance and related asset management, 21.5%; Mitsui Direct General, domestic non-life insurance and related asset management, 0.6%; MSI Aioi Life, domestic life insurance and related asset management, 4.0%; MSI Primary Life, domestic life insurance and related asset management, 1.7%; and international business, 38.3%. These shares use consolidated external revenue of ¥6,436.0 billion as the denominator; they do not sum to 100% because the consolidated total also includes other items and adjustments.[23]

The international segment covers insurance and asset-management activities of overseas subsidiaries and affiliates; the parent company and domestic non-life insurers also conduct international business. The financial-services domain includes asset management and venture capital, while the digital/risk-related-services domain includes risk management and related services.[22] [21]

Company history

MS&AD’s history traces back to 1893. Mitsui Marine & Fire Insurance and Sumitomo Marine & Fire Insurance, two of its principal predecessor companies, were established in 1918 and merged in October 2001 to form Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance.[4][24]

Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Group Holdings was established as a holding company in April 2008. In April 2010, it adopted the MS&AD Insurance Group Holdings name as the integration of Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance, Aioi Insurance and Nissay Dowa General Insurance took effect. Later that year, Aioi Insurance and Nissay Dowa General Insurance merged to form Aioi Nissay Dowa Insurance.[25][26]

Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance completed its acquisition of Amlin in February 2016. In February 2026, MS&AD reached a final agreement to merge Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance and Aioi Nissay Dowa Insurance, with the merger planned for April 1, 2027, subject to approvals.[27] [28]
