Overview

Nutrien Ltd. is a global agricultural inputs company, combining fertilizer production and marketing with a retail business that supplies crop nutrients, crop-protection products, seed and agronomic services. Its four main business segments are Retail, Potash, Nitrogen and Phosphate.[1] Nutrien’s retail operations span North America, Australia and South America, with more than 2,000 locations in seven countries; the company also reports supplying fertilizer to customers in more than 50 countries.[1]

Nutrien describes its purpose as “Feeding the Future.” [4] It reported 2025 sales of US$26.885 billion and lists a workforce of 26,000 employees.[5][6] The company was formed in 2018 through the merger of Agrium and PotashCorp.[7] [1]

Products & services

Nutrien’s fertilizer products include potash (potassium chloride, 60–63.2% K₂O), ESN® controlled-release nitrogen fertilizer (44% N), liquid UAN solutions (28–32% N), DAP (46% P₂O₅), MAP (52% P₂O₅), merchant-grade acid (54% P₂O₅), superphosphoric acid (70% P₂O₅), ammonium sulfate and micronized sulfur technology (P+S).[8] Its broader product range includes crop nutrients and micronutrients, crop-protection products for managing weeds, pests and disease, and seed; Nutrien reports about 1,700 proprietary products and eight formulation facilities.[9][10]

Retail services include product application, soil and leaf testing, crop scouting, precision agriculture, water services and customer financing through Nutrien Financial. Retail locations also sell merchandise such as fencing, feed supplements, livestock animal-health products, storage and irrigation equipment.[9] In the first half of 2026, Retail reported sales of $5.024 billion in crop nutrients, $3.892 billion in crop protection, $1.840 billion in seed, $483 million in services and other, and $514 million in merchandise.[11] [8]

Geographic presence

Nutrien’s operating footprint spans North America, South America and Australia, while its Potash, Nitrogen and Phosphate businesses include global sales, freight, transportation and distribution activities [12]. Its six potash operations are in Saskatchewan. Nitrogen production includes 11 facilities in North America and one in Trinidad; phosphate operations include mines and plants in Florida and North Carolina, feed plants in Illinois, Missouri and Nebraska, and an industrial phosphoric-acid plant in Ohio [13].

Nutrien’s Retail business currently lists operations in the United States, Canada, Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Chile and Uruguay, with more than 2,000 locations [2]. For 2025, potash sales were $1.727 billion in North America and $2.264 billion offshore, out of $3.995 billion total—approximately 43% and 57%, respectively [14]. These figures apply to potash sales, not company-wide revenue, and the offshore amount is not broken down by country. Nutrien’s current locations page reports 26,000 employees globally but does not provide a regional employee breakdown [6]. [12]

Business segments

Nutrien reports four operating segments: Retail, Potash, Nitrogen and Phosphate. Retail serves farmers through crop nutrients, crop-protection products, seed and merchandise, as well as agronomic, application and financial services. Potash focuses on potash production and related sales; Nitrogen on ammonia, urea and other nitrogen products; and Phosphate on solid and liquid fertilizers and industrial and feed products. The Potash, Nitrogen and Phosphate segments also include related sales, freight, transport and distribution activities.[12][15]

In FY2025, the segments’ approximate shares of consolidated third-party sales were Retail 65.5%, Potash 13.3%, Nitrogen 14.2% and Phosphate 6.2%. By adjusted EBITDA, their respective shares were 28.7%, 37.3%, 35.5% and 6.3%. EBITDA shares exceed 100% in total because Corporate and Others and eliminations reduce consolidated adjusted EBITDA; Corporate and Others is not a reportable operating segment.[16][17] [12]

Company history

Nutrien’s potash roots trace to Patience Lake, Canada’s first potash producer, in 1958; the company also dates its first 1,000 tonnes of potash produced and shipped to 1959.[18][19]

The modern company emerged from the merger of Agrium and Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan (PotashCorp), announced as a merger of equals on September 12, 2016. The merger took effect on January 1, 2018, combining the two companies under the newly formed Nutrien Ltd.[20]

In 2019, Nutrien expanded its Australian agriservices presence by completing the acquisition of Ruralco Holdings on September 30. Ruralco had about 250 operating locations, and its businesses were subsequently brought together under Nutrien Ag Solutions.[23][24]

On December 10, 2025, Nutrien completed the sale of its 50% ownership interest in Profertil, an Argentine nitrogen producer, for gross proceeds of US$595 million.[25] [21]
