Company history

Ping An was founded in Shekou, Shenzhen, on May 27, 1988, by Ma Mingzhe as China’s first joint-stock insurance company.[28][29] In 1992 it adopted the name Ping An Insurance Company of China and began expanding nationwide. Its move beyond insurance gathered pace with the establishment of Ping An Securities in 1995 and the acquisition of ICBC Pearl River Delta Financial Trust Joint Company in 1996, which became Ping An Trust & Investment Company.[4]

HSBC acquired a stake in 2002, and the group was established in 2003 as Ping An pursued integrated financial operations. The company listed in Hong Kong in 2004 and on the Shanghai Stock Exchange in 2007.[4][30] In 2011 it became the controlling shareholder of Shenzhen Development Bank; the bank merged with the former Ping An Bank in 2012. Ping An also established Lufax in 2012 as it expanded into financial technology.[4][31]

Later milestones included the launch of a rural-support program in 2018 and the adoption of a health-care-ecosystem strategy in 2021.[4] On July 1, 2020, Ma Mingzhe resigned as CEO while remaining chairman, and Yao Bo was appointed co-CEO.[32] [4]
