Sekisui House Ltd. is a Japan-based housing, construction and real-estate group. Its businesses include detached homes, rental and commercial buildings, construction, housing management and renovation, property brokerage and development, and overseas housing and real estate. Japan is its home market, with international operations including the United States, Australia and Singapore.[1]
The company’s philosophy is “love of humanity,” with an emphasis on customer happiness and creating homes and environments that meet people’s needs.[2] Established in 1960, Sekisui House reported FY2025 consolidated net sales of ¥4.198 trillion and had 32,186 employees as of January 31, 2026.[3][4][5] [4][5][1][2][3]
Products & services
Sekisui House offers custom-designed detached homes under its SHAWOOD brand, as well as rental housing under the Sha Maison brand. Its housing products include ZEH homes designed for energy efficiency; the company reported that 96% of new detached houses were ZEH in FY2025, while FY2024 ZEH rates were 96% for detached houses and 77% for rental houses.[6][7][8]
Related services include home design and construction, inspections, maintenance and after-sales support, plus rental-property operation and management, renovations, and resident services.[9][8] In FY2024, sales mix by business segment was Built-to-Order 32.9%, Supplied Housing 21.3%, Development 14.2%, and Overseas 31.2%.[1][10] [11][12][13][6][7][8][9][1][10]
Geographic presence
Sekisui House’s geographic footprint is centered in Japan, with overseas operations in the United States, Australia, and Singapore. Through FY2025, it had built a cumulative 2,679,238 homes in Japan and 70,282 overseas; these figures describe homes built, not revenue by region.[14][1]
Its U.S. community-development activity spans Central, East, and Northwest regions. In Australia, projects include the Sydney and Brisbane regions. The FY2025 annual report lists international-business subsidiaries in California and Colorado in the U.S. and New South Wales in Australia; Japanese group-company locations include Sendai, Tokyo, Nagoya, Osaka, Hiroshima, and Fukuoka.[15][16]
A geographic breakdown of FY2025 actual revenue was not identified. Sekisui House’s FY2025 plan cited net sales of ¥1,605.1 billion in the U.S. and ¥131.9 billion in Australia; these are planned, not actual, amounts.[17][18] [14][15][17][1][16][18]
Business segments
Sekisui House’s FY2026 first-half business breakdown groups its operations into Contract-type (custom detached houses, rental and business-use buildings, and architecture and civil engineering), Stock-type (rental housing management and remodeling), Development-type (brokerage and real estate, condominiums, and urban redevelopment), and International business (overseas operations). The company also reports “Other” separately.[19][20]
For the six months ended July 31, 2026, these groupings contributed approximately 33.6% of consolidated net sales for Contract-type, 24.1% for Stock-type, 18.6% for Development-type, 24.7% for International business, and 0.2% for Other. These estimates divide each grouping’s reported sales by consolidated net sales; segment sales include intersegment transactions, so the percentages do not sum to 100%.[19] [21][22][19][20]
Company history
Sekisui House originated in Sekisui Chemical’s housing division. It began marketing its Model A home in April 1960 and was incorporated that August, with Jiro-o Ueno as its first president; the company adopted the Sekisui House name in October 1963.[23]
The company expanded its homebuilding and production capabilities over the following decades: it listed on the Tokyo and Osaka stock exchanges in 1970, introduced its M-type home in 1972 and NC concrete home in 1975, and opened its Comprehensive Housing R&D Institute in 1990. It launched SHAWOOD, its timber-home business, in 1995.[23][24][25]
Sekisui House began overseas operations in Australia in 2009. It expanded into U.S. homebuilding through the 2017 acquisition of Woodside Homes, followed by acquisitions including Holt Homes and Chesmar Homes in 2022. In 2024, it completed the acquisition of U.S. homebuilder M.D.C. Holdings.[26][27][28][29][30] [23][24][25][26][27][28][29][30]
