SOFTBANK CORP

Updated

Overview

SoftBank Corp. is a Japan-focused telecommunications and digital-services company. Its businesses span Consumer, Enterprise, Distribution, Media & EC, and Financial services, including mobile and broadband communications, business technology solutions, and digital services.[1] The company describes its purpose as contributing to people’s happiness through the Information Revolution and becoming a corporate group needed by people around the world.[4]

For the fiscal year ended March 31, 2026, SoftBank Corp. reported consolidated revenue of ¥7,038.7 billion; it had 58,432 consolidated employees as of that date.[5][6] [1]

Products & services

SoftBank Corp.’s consumer offerings include the SoftBank, Y!mobile and LINEMO mobile brands, home broadband services SoftBank Hikari and SoftBank Air, and Ouchi Denki electricity service. Its reported consumer revenue categories include mobile, broadband, electricity, and goods and other revenue; public disclosures do not provide revenue shares for individual tariffs or named consumer products.[7]

For business customers, the company offers mobile and fixed-line communications alongside digital-transformation solutions that include cloud, security, AI and IoT. Its media and commerce services include Yahoo! JAPAN advertising and media, Yahoo! JAPAN Shopping, Yahoo! JAPAN Auction, Yahoo! JAPAN Flea Market and ZOZOTOWN. Financial offerings include PayPay and PayPay Card cashless payments, as well as group banking and securities services. FY2025 reporting provides revenue categories for these business segments, but not a product-level percentage breakdown for the named services.[11] [10]

Geographic presence

SoftBank Corp.’s consumer mobile, broadband, and electricity services are focused on customers in Japan. Its enterprise business also offers global services, including communications and IT solutions. The company’s FY2025 reporting covers the year ended March 31, 2026; the materials reviewed do not provide a country- or region-level revenue breakdown, so geographic revenue shares cannot be stated.[3][17]

The corporate headquarters is in Minato-ku, Tokyo. SoftBank’s overseas-office directory lists 25 locations across 11 countries, including the United States, United Kingdom, China, Singapore, India, Thailand, Vietnam, and Indonesia; this directory should not be taken as a complete accounting of all group offices. As of March 31, 2026, the company reported 19,150 non-consolidated employees and 58,432 consolidated employees, without a geographic employee breakdown in the cited data.[6] [3]

Business segments

SoftBank Corp. reports five business segments. The Consumer segment provides mobile, broadband and electricity services, as well as devices, to individual customers; it generated ¥3,015.1 billion, approximately 42.8% of consolidated revenue in FY2025 (year ended March 31, 2026). The Enterprise segment serves companies and municipalities with telecommunications and business solutions, including cloud, security, digital transformation and AI services; it contributed ¥1,002.9 billion, or about 14.2%.[3]

The Distribution segment supplies IT products and services to corporate customers and software, mobile accessories and IoT products to consumers; revenue was ¥1,056.3 billion, about 15.0%. Media & EC encompasses internet media and commerce, including advertising and online shopping; it generated ¥1,668.0 billion, about 23.7%. The Financial segment includes cashless payments, payment processing, online banking and smartphone-based securities services; it contributed ¥404.5 billion, about 5.7%.[3]

These approximate percentages compare each segment’s reported FY2025 revenue with consolidated revenue of ¥7,038.7 billion. The segment figures total more than consolidated revenue, so the percentages are not additive; segment and intersegment adjustments affect the consolidated total.[17][10] [10]

Company history

SOFTBANK CORP.’s telecom history traces to JAPAN TELECOM, founded in 1984, and Railway Telecommunication, established in 1986. Railway Telecommunication and JAPAN TELECOM merged in 1989 under the JAPAN TELECOM name.[20] In 2004, SoftBank acquired JAPAN TELECOM; in 2006, it acquired Vodafone K.K., which became SOFTBANK MOBILE.[21][22] The mobile business introduced the iPhone in Japan in 2008.[23]

In 2013, SoftBank expanded its mobile operations through the acquisition of eAccess; eAccess and WILLCOM merged in 2014, with the combined company taking the Ymobile name.[24][25] On April 1, 2015, SoftBank Mobile absorbed SoftBank BB, SoftBank Telecom and Ymobile, and adopted the SOFTBANK CORP. name that July.[26][27] The company began commercial 5G service in 2020 and launched its online-only LINEMO brand in 2021.[28][29] It listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange in December 2018.[30] [20]
