WEC Energy Group’s customer offerings include electricity, natural gas, and district steam. We Energies supplies steam to downtown Milwaukee customers for uses including space and water heating, sterilizing, laundering, and food processing; it serves about 300 district-energy customers. Company history
WEC Energy Group’s utility roots trace to 1896, when the Milwaukee Electric Railway and Light Co. was formed to provide electric, steam and interurban rail service. Its predecessor adopted the Wisconsin Electric Power Co. name in 1938, and Wisconsin Electric expanded through the 1941 purchase of Wisconsin Gas & Electric and Wisconsin Michigan Power. Later milestones included the first Oak Creek generating unit in 1953 and the start of operations at Point Beach Nuclear Plant in 1970.[27]
Wisconsin Energy Corporation was incorporated in 1981 and became a diversified holding company in 1986. It acquired WICOR, parent of Wisconsin Gas, in 2000; Wisconsin Natural merged with Wisconsin Electric in 1996, and the combined utility adopted the We Energies name in 2002. In 2007, WPS Resources merged with Peoples Energy and became Integrys Energy Group. On June 29, 2015, Wisconsin Energy completed its acquisition of Integrys and changed its name to WEC Energy Group, Inc.[28][29][27][30][7] [28][27][29][30][7]
