Company history
Wipro was incorporated on December 29, 1945, as Western India Vegetable Products Limited by Mohamed Hasham Premji, initially producing vegetable oil in Amalner, India. It held its Indian IPO in 1946. Under Azim H. Premji, the company expanded into information technology in the late 1970s and early 1980s, began selling PCs in 1985, and entered software services for international clients during the 1990s.[32][33][34] In October 2000, Wipro listed American depositary shares on the New York Stock Exchange; in 2002–03 it expanded into IT-enabled services through its acquisition of Spectramind.[32][35][36]
In 2013, Wipro demerged its non-IT businesses to focus on IT. Azim Premji retired as Executive Chairman in 2019 after 53 years of leadership, and Rishad Premji became Executive Chairman; Srini Pallia became CEO and Managing Director in 2024. The company also broadened its technology and consulting capabilities through acquisitions including Appirio (2016), Capco (2021), and Rizing (2022), and completed its acquisition of HARMAN’s Digital Transformation Solutions business in December 2025.[34][37][38][39][40][41][42] [32][34][33][35][36][37][38][39][40][41][42][33][35][36][37][38][39][40][41][42]
